Any info for a newbie to snakes would be greatly appreciated. I've read alot about them but it's always good to have first hand advice.

Absolutely gorgeous! Welcome to snake parenting, get ready to be addicted. Seriously, they are like potato chips, you can't have just one! I swore I'd only have one & I'm getting my 5th on Valentine's Day! Well, congratulations again.
Thanks :) Does anybody know what color phase he is? I've been looking and the closest I could come was a Motley Miami Phase but even that doesn't look quite right.

What is the pattern on his belly like. He has normal colouring more yellow will develop as he gets older.
His belly is completely white, no patterning at all.

yeah I started off with one last year and i am at ten now
I'd already like to get more but I doubt it'll happen LOL. I had a hard enough time convincing my boyfriend that I needed a snake on top of a cat, two dogs, and 6 aquariums.

its a normal motley
Yeah, I would agree, normal motley, if the pattern on it's belly is checked, then I'm wrong, but if the belly is plain, then I'm right.
Just looked at the pics again, I'm right lol. :medtoothy

Where did you get him from. He looks very similar to one of mine which i bread last year. I shipped some to Ontario, If so i can give you all the genetics on him??
I got him from a pet store in Sudbury where I live. He had just got them from a breeder. He said they were hatched in September. There were two others like him but with much larger spots and a snow all from the same hatch.
Sadly the little guy died. He seemed perfectly healthy but would not eat. I had him just over two weeks and tried everything I could think of to get him to eat (even considered force feeding but didn't think I was at that point yet :( ) The day before he died he was wandering around his cage during the day, still very active. The next morning I woke up and he was lying in his cage outside his hide, which I thought was odd, so I poked him and discovered he was dead. It's entirely possible he never ate in his life but I'm just not sure. He had no signs of illness so I would have to assume he starved to death.

Well, you wanted advice so get ready: You should keep it in a 10 gallon tank till its about 20 inches long, feed it pinkies till its 25 inches, feed it mice till its 48 inches, give it checkups at a vet once a year or so, after 20 inches long feed it only every 1 1/2-2 weeks, keep its cage no higher than 90 degrees and no lower than 75 (except if hibernating or at night), and most importantly, get another!

I would seriously recommend going with an established breeder for the next Corn. They shouldn't just be up & dying on you guys. Baby Corns should only be sold if they are healthy, parasite free & established feeders & with some guarrantee to ensure it. If as stated it was entirely possible it never ate its whole life, it should have never been considered for sale or for purchase. Whenever a baby snake is bought it is very important to know the what, when & hows in reguards to its feeding status & if the info can't be provided/guarranteed or if not well established on F/T prey, don't buy it. In reguards to "feed it pinkies till its 25 inches" as posted, this is WRONG. The snake would be seriously underfed. A 2 foot cornsnake should easily be taking down multiple hoppers per feeding, not being fed pinkies. A general rule of thumb for feeding is 1-3 prey items approx the same girth or 1.5 times the girth of the thickest part of the snake weekly for the first 2-3 years. Most Corns can be bumped up from pinkies to small fuzzies after the first couple months. Mark

Thats terrible news, sorry to hear that the little corn died. It certainly was not one of mine who were born in july with some very established feeders sold to pcpc. Let this be a lesson learned as Mark said and get a history and all the info on a snake that you can before buying. I would never buy a snake without having its feeding records, parents history, whom bred buy etc. Good luck in the future. Jim
