I am planning on getting crested soon and was wondering are they ok to live on their own or do they seem happier with 2 or more?

Unless they are two males... Always in colonies! they are social little guys... So I've heard. Never keep two males to gether, and one male/one female might breed excessively... two females, or 1.2+ *SO I'VE HEARD* :)

There's no reason you can't keep one by itself, but there are interesting interactions in colonies (one male per group).
I have a trio that has been in a 30-something gallon natural set up for a few years. One of the females and the male follow each other around constantly, and call to each other a lot. I've heard something that sounds like a pleasant bird call coming from their tank, but I haven't been able to record it yet.
Anyway, make sure the animals are old enough and sexable before putting them together.
