Same deal with a different snake last night. Accidentally touched her face with the rat, but saved it Billy Ranford style by doing the "pull away". Always get's 'em.
Are we learning anything? They don't eat like Boas. Some do, but those are exceptions. And if they do, it won't last forever. Especially when you start cycling.....

Ah! Good stuff.
A question though. I have noticed in many feeding pics and videos that alot of keepers tend to hold the rats by the back. I always hold mine by the tail, because I find that if I hold them mid body the snakes just end up coiling up my tongs. Is there any certain advantage to holding them by the back or midbody?? Is there something about dangling them by the tail that I might not have realized that is bad/wrong?? Is there a trick to not getting your tongs all wrapped up??

If you hold it by the tail, the rat becomes HUGE and TALL. I find the BP's get scared. I hold them by the back, so it looks like they are crawling around.

i hold my rats more by the butt as ive had my BP hit my tongs once and had a rats tail break off once.

Great stuff Jeff, keep 'em coming!
to add to what Jeff replied about holding the rat by the tail, is the if you do that the rat will swing left-to-right a lot more and sometimes the snake will actually miss the rat when striking.. most of the time, this is not a problem.. but in a few cases, I've seen a ball python get turned off completely because they missed and decide not to eat lol! I have taken an approach similar to what Jeff has shown in the video now... but they are not like other snakes, they do take longer to feed than other snakes because you have to wait a few minutes to see if it will eat or not... I'm starting to learn when not to bother trying any longer though.. Jeff has been pointing those thing out..
Interesting stuff Jeff!

neat videos you've been posting Jeff. All my ball pythons get fed with the lights on actually all my snakes do. I have had 2 go off feed for a month or so. I'll have to start trying it with maybe just the hall way light on.

I've been offering a new ball python a rat once week for a month now with no luck. I haven't moved the rat around, I just drop it in. My other Ball takes it without any movement. Do you guys have more success when you move the rat around?

I would think.. I don't think any of my snakes would pick a f/t rat off the floor without it moving... to be honest I don't know if I've actually tried that, but I always try to tease feed even when I know they will be eating for sure.. watch the videos Jeff posted.. it should help, may not necessarily cure your problem as there may be something else bothering that particular animal, but certainly wouldn't hurt to try...

Depends on the individual snake. I have gotten impatient from time to time, and just left a f/t in the enclosure overnight. Sometimes it's gone by morning, other times not.

Letting go of the rat? I hold mid-body and have never had the tongs get coiled.
