Tonight I finally switched over my female cornsnake Craxy to dead. She took a small f/t rat tonight:D:D. Below are some pics.

low light pic of craxy eating

Pic of her eating with a bit too much flash ( I'll get the lighting right one day lol :p)

And lastly one more pic with too much flash ( maybe I went to close to the glass, just wanted to make sure I captured the moment)

Hope you enjoy:)

If I were you I'd be very concerned with the amount of substrate your snake is ingesting along with the rat. Impaction is always a risk when feeding on a loose substrate and with that amount being taken in you could very easily have your snake develop serious problems. I know it is pretty rare to hear a snake die of impaction but it does happen and if I were you I'd start feeding outside the enclosure or at least on top of a piece of paper or something.

I DEFFINETLY agree...wow thats a ton of substrate getting stuck to the rat. You could try feeding it out of the enclosure in a secure rubbermaid or use a different substrate.

ok thanks I'll remember that for next week, I sorta forgot never had that with live because they were more dry and the substrate wouldn't stick to them.

Yes I agree. All my snakes that are on cypress I feed in a separate tub. For my snakes on newspaper I feed inside their enclosure.

Nice to hear you got your snake switched over though heh its always a + to get a snake on rats or F/T.

you could also try a feeding dish.. just put it in a medium sized shallow dish and that way no substrate..

i dont know if it would work but someone on here might be able to tell u if it will

Congrats that Craxy switched. Definitely feed outside the enclosure next time if you want to keep the substrate.

Or you can just dry the rat off.:)

It all depends on what kind of feeder the snake is.......if the snake will just casually stroll up to the rodent and just start swallowing then a piece of paper or a shallow dish would most likely work. If your snake on the other hand strikes and coils or thrashes around with the rat then any kind of paper or dish is pretty much useless.

I didn't mean to jump on you either Nicky and I hope it didn't seem that I was I just wanted to point out something that may become a problem. But, definately congrats on getting your corn switched over to F/T, always the best way to go.

Congrats, everyone else has already said what I would have but I'm big on having my snake eat in a seperate enclosure anyways. Not big on being struck by snakes although it happens. Like to keep the risk down.

No prob Ryan:) You know how exciting it is when they finally switch for ya, sorta forget about everything else. If only my male would of the done the same I left him overnight in a rubbermaid with a dead mouse and it was still in thier when I got home *sigh* maybe next week.
Thanks for the comments everyone, I assure you next week will have pics of a nice clean rat in a rubbermiad:)
Cheers

That's awesome Kayla!!! :D Congrats...

I agree with peterm, when I had a Kenyan sand boa I fed her in her enclosure but in a little clay water dish so she wouldn't ingest any substrate... when she was done eating she'd just go and burrow again. :)

I also used small feeding dishes to feed my snakes in their enclosures....worked great! Even with the picky eaters! I nver had problems with them refusing meals and substrate ingestion and impaction were non-existant. I highly recommend it if you decide to feed inside an enclosure with a loose substrate.

I find with my smaller species of snakes feeding in a seperate contioner works good, when I have them on loose substrate. Congrates on getting him to feed on F/T

I have the same substrate and its supposed to be safe, but i just put the mouse on a papertowel and then put it in the cage no problemo.

That feeding container was a great suggestion I just placed a rubbermaid in the cage with her and boom no more shavings:)

if you could have switched over earlier, would you of? i have a new cornsnake and it is much easier to get f/t mouse, than live fuzzies as they sell out real quick. i am currentley feeding live prey, i geuss i just have to try, or should i wait till she is bigger she is 16" now

Nice pic and great solution - very pretty cornsnake.

Lizardo - definitely try and switch as early as possible - saves a lot of hassle and most corns have no problems taking thawed. Just make sure the mouse is fully thawed and then warmed up - might want to be sure the snake is quite hungry for the first thawed meal too - wait a couple days longer than usual before offering thawed for the first time.
