The animal must have a specific gene inside them that creates a mutation in the color, causing pastels to be a lot more yellow and light blushes as compared to a normal. Any trait that is passed down and changes the out come of the offspring even a bit, is considered a morph.
If you have a very high gold/yellowish NORMAL then it cant be "considered" a pastel, even though they looks similar, it is just a normal, unless of course it is passed on to its next offspring.
Correct me if im wrong.

High gold and pastel are different. High gold is a spontaneous occurence/genetic makeup that shows up randomly within animals, though I believe some line breeding has caused some normals to have a higher amount of yellow than usual. The difference between a high gold and pastel are very noticeable. But otherwise Adam nailed it on the head.

Its weird, ive heard of drab colored normals creating very gold offspring. So like you said its VERY random.

Yeah.
Im sure, like the nuclear kenyan sand boas, there are line bred high gold animals, but normally, yes, its random. The pastel is a gene that occurs in a pretictable and determined pattern.
