Itsy Bitsy Spider going for a walk on my driveway.... so I ran the other way (to get the camera, of course) :)

I'm just curious what species this is. I never saw any like it previously, but this year I saw at least a dozen. Mind you, I'm not really a spider-holic so I've never gone out looking for any, maybe I just missed seeing them before. Are they native to Southern Ontario, or could it be an introduced species (hopefully not escaped pets).

He is referring to Lord of the Rings and the part with the giant spider :)

For clarification.... Tolkien fans have often debated about what really happened to Shelob after Sam stabbed her. Most believe that the Giant spider Shelob (last of the surviving offspring of Ungoliant) simply crawled back into her lair and died from her wounds. But... they are clearly wrong.... Shelob is alive and well, if a bit shrunken on Hilde's driveway :)

Yeah, I guess I am a little bit of a Tolkien geek....... :)

Looks like an Araneus sp. Can't be sure about the species though. Tough lil buggers to identify.

Thanks for the clarification, DJ. If that spider is a 'big shrunken' from what's in the movie, I'm kind of glad I didn't see it. :)

I guess I'll go digging around for Araneus sp info and pictures. I'm really curious about those guys, specially why I'd never seen them before and suddenly they're all over the place this year. Thanks for the species name, Vanan.
