View Full Version : Sex determination in jcp's
Hi, I have 2 Jcp's that were bought as 1.1 but I have now noticed that the spurs located at their cloaca is similar in size (quite l"large") in both snakes. They are arround three years old and about 4 - 4,5 feet long. Can their spurs be that similar in size if the snakes are not of the same sex?
Raymond Hoser the eminent Australian herpetologist has published many papers dealing with the snakes of Australia.
He has clearly stated that the best way to 'sex' JCP's is by probing, as JCP's are not sexually dimorphic in appearance. This of course means, amongst other things, that the spurs of a female may well be of similar size to those of the male in similar sized snakes.

Spurs are an ENTIRELY INACCURATE method of sexing carpets. Tony is right.

I bought a jag phase and a sibling which were supposed to be a pair, and later bought an adult which was supposed to be a sexed female, which was ace because the male would have been big enought to breed next year. However after probing them both younger ones turned out to be female and the adult a male! stil have 1.2 but just longer to wait for babies :( lesson i learnt, dont trust anyone (even your boss! lol) stil cant complain at the price i paid for them compared to what somebody said they are going for over there!

Its not always a "trust" thing, as humans are prone to error, so I guess you could say you can trust us to make mistakes LOL Popping as babies leaves zero doubt for males. If they have hemipenes they have hemipenes & probing to confirm young females is always recomended. With older snakes all this tail length, spur size etc. BS is inaccurrate & probing is the only sure method of sexing them. Mark
P.S. Another way is if they lay eggs they are females for sure LOL
