View Full Version : Temp check for IJCP
Hi everyone, thanks in advance. I got a IJCP from Kyle Kunimoto at the Red Deer show. I have him in a 18.5 L rubbermaid. I am using a infrared light at the moment but I can't keep the humidity up past 50 for very long (couple hours). I am going to buy another rubbermaid as this one have a hole in the top for the light and I'm going to use a UTH on a rheostat. Should the temp at the hot spot be in the mid eightys? That's what the VPI site suggested. And my main concern is where. In the perch above the pad or on the substrate? I have a temp gun so I would be zapping the substrate. Any inpiut would help. Thanks. BTW i'll try to post pics soon as he is a beauty. Has a very consitent banded pattern. Stood out from all the rest. All the rest had the traditional labrynth or jaquar look. So i'm not concerned about there being any JCP influence in the blood. (I have been asked this already, not suggesting myself that he does, just other people think so)

A good hot spot for IJ's is around 90-92. Some people may keep it lower but I find this to be prefect. My IJ loves the hot side more so obviously i'm doing something right with my temps...
I keep mine at 89-91 depending on ambient temp.
Thanks hooter. What heat source do u have? I know they climb a bit so I was wondering how i can get the temp on the perches high enough as I find heat from UTH doesn't reach too much past the substrate. Or does it and i'm just crazy? How about mounting a head pad on the wall of the rubbermaid? Does that work?

I house my IJ's in a rack and its heated via heat pad from the back so its sort of like radient heat but it keeps the air warm and my IJ's do fine with this setup. I would recommend a heat pad placed under the rubbermaidd but if your IJ likes to post up on branches or whatever you could consider a heat lamp as well.
I know many people who use heat pads during the day set to a timmer to go off at night and then a timmer to click on the heat lamp with a red bulb for night time viewing and allowing the snake to bask. Considering carpets come out more at night this setup seems to work very well and allows for a nice display.
Being you use a tub though a regular heat pad or heat tape would be your best best to heat the cage.
