I was wondering if anyone had a definative answer about whether a black light would blind a gecko if it was used for night time observation. Or if they are okay to use. Do any of you use one, have you noticed any affects?

I've used blacklights and seen them used in a variety of reptile cages and have never seen a problem, but some people swear that it harms their eyes. Personally, unless someone can provide substantial proof to those claims, I don't buy it.

My reasoning for not using them is that it is in no way natural. Their eyes wouldn't be exposed to this form of light in the wild, so there is no way of knowing if would be harmful or not. I prefer to never take chances with my animals:D

ps.good question!

In short, no. I use the Exo-Terra Night Glow bulbs in my chondro cages and they don't make things glow like a "black light" would. They're just a very dim light bulb, used to create heat without so much light output...totally different from the "black light" fluorescents or the "black light" incandescents that you see at places like Wal-Mart, etc.

a buddy of mine uses cathode glow blulbs on his crested. I havent seen it yet, but he says it give a glow just like a computer monitor would if you turned the lights off. He says he observes normal activity.
