View Full Version : How are jcp's?

Well lately I’m just beginning to skim into different types of snakes I’ve read about or seen and I’m thinking of getting something in the next month or two. The one species that catches my attention time and time again are jcp, or really any carpet pythons.

My choice for jungle's is because they stay smaller then Ij's. I was wondering if its a good snake. I own a ball python and a couple corns, so I have some experience with picky eaters (ball) and keeping snakes in general.

I was thinking to pick up a jcp because I really like that they are somewhat arboreal. I’ve read that they use the ground, but they would still need a more vertical built tank right?

I also wanted to know if it fits into what I’m looking for.

A snake that stays from 4-6 feet. What is the average for jcps? Are their any smaller cp species that are just as readily available? Is 375 to much for a cb baby (its also retail so i understand it would be higher then a breeder)

A snake that is relatively easy to handle or at least has a high tolerance as it would be a pet and id like to be able to handle it from time to time.

How are their feeding habits? Picky, easy to get onto different food items, and do they eat like arboreals or both in the canopy and floor?

If I were to acquire one it would be a baby or juvi so how are they for temperament as little ones?

And last, what is the average price's at the Toronto Expo's and are they usually easy to find their?

Thanks everyone!

IJ's are actually smaller.

Mine handle fine and are pretty tame. the were a little nipp at first but I had no problem letting my six year old hold them. she'ld rather get bite by a JCP than her hedgehog

Mine spend the day on the ground but the night crawling all over crap.

They say a 36x18x24 is good. I have an area in my room between two windows. Asuming that is lengthxwidthxheight is a 32x18x36 okay?

you should probably buy breeder direct, that way you will know not only that your animal has been cared for by a knowledgable individual, but you will be able to look at the parents to get a sense of what it will turn out like. also, it tends to be less expensive for higher quality animals. a guy i know breeds really nice jungles and sells them for only about 200 - 250 for babies and like 400 for a breeding age male.

Does anyone know breeders in the GTA or if anyone will be selling them at the show or has in the past?

Adam, one name comes to mind when it comes to Jungles.. Jeff Favelle... Go to his site, check out his stock.. He has amazing animals.. It might be worth it for you to pay the extra for shipping, that way you know exactly what you're getting.. That's not to say that there's no one else closer to you breeding animals as nice or nicer.. But i would definatly look in to getting some from Jeff!!

Who sent me a PM? LOL! I get and seeee ALL!!!

Ha ha , J/K. Adam, bro, I didn't get a PM from you, or if I did, maybe I erased it by mistake? Damn, sorry if I did man. Email (jefffavelle@shaw.ca) and phone (250-516-7004) are other ways to get a hold of me as well.

Thanks for plug Matty! You want your usual 10%?? LOL! :D

Lol, well I have a friend in Kelowna BC right now and was wondering if he could pick one up from you for me. But then I thought about how he'd bring it onto a plain. Is this possible or would I just need to ship?

Ill email you now :) Thanks!

And yeah, Derrick is right, Irians are usually a little smaller on average. Most times they are about the same from what I've experienced.

Dom is out in Ontario if shipping scares you. He had some Jungles for sale. Hiss and Hers Pythons are awesome breeders as well, and they work with BOTH Irians and Jungles. Tons to choose from man. Go with your gut feeling and what YOU find most visually-appealing for the value. No one can tell you who or what is better. I can thell you though, that it will become your favorite snake! LOL! No question.

And all my adult cages are 36x18x24. Its just fine. Some females may get HUGE and require a full 48 in length and maybe even 24 in height. But they are rare.

Cheers. Let us know how it goes man! There's tons of knowledgable Carpet breeders and keepers here to make your first experience a positive one! :D

HI,
I have a Pair of Jungle carpet/ Diamond pythons. They are just wonderful. I got to breed them and had 21 little babys. I was pleased. As baby's they are a little nippy. They think everything is going to eat them.. Then with a little handling they calm down. I have never been tagged by the parents. Great eaters, pretty to.
Hope this helps,
Jess

Thanks for the good words. What is most important to me is to just get one from someone who knows what their doing. So if I can manage to get one from you (which would be my first choice from what ive seen in your stock! :)) but if not maybe down the road when they take over me:D

Ha ha for sure Matty. No question. :D

Adam, you can't just bring it back on the plane. I've tried, LOL! He/she would just have to ship it anyways. If you have your heart set on gettin' one, then try and jump in with someone and split shipping. I ship to Ontario on average twice a week lately, so I'm sure someone wouldn't mind splitting the shipping. It'd have to be someone you trust though. No rush, as you probably don't even have the cages calibrated, decor, etc etc. There's some good care sheets out there. I say blaze through a few of them, and then come back to the "spilota" forum and ask specific questions. Get all that stuff ironed out before you beging to think about making a purchase.

Cheers bro! :D

For a 36x18x24, if I built it would it be to big for a baby? Could a baby be kept in a 10 gallon, like would it be better? Or a 15 whatever.

Yep forsure :) I still have a month or atleast until after the show. I need to sell my leopard gecko's as well, not for any specific reason other then the fact I just want to get out of them lol :D

Thanks for all the help!

Babies go in the 18.5L "tallie" Rubbermaid for about 8 months to a year. Then, when they're bursting to get out, they can make the transition to an adult cage.

Baby snakes NEVER (rarely) go in adult cages. AT least, not if you want them to do well.

And fish cages (aquariums) are for fish. Snakes go in snake cages. Or in this case, Rubbermaids, LOL! :D

haha i know.

I was thinking thought to make a small melamine cage that is equal to a 15 or even 20 gallon. Is that still alright?
