about a month ago I noticed my fasting emperor was looking mighty plump. After asking around about it I came to the assumption that she was going to molt....until I looked in a few days ago and saw this...

What a great surprise!

Nice pic too :) I find it so cute that the mom carries her young on her back.

Heh, Yve, just take them off the back when they start to venture off the mother. Place them all in one KK, or seperately if you want. Then you can start feeding them live food (small crix or whatever). That's what I did.

Aidan, this is confusing me a bit.....some say to keep them with the mother and others say to seperate. how did you pull them off her back? At the moment I am just looking in a couple times a day to see what they're up to. The mother gets very defensive, even though all I'm doing is lifting the lid and looking(aside from the pic I took:o). Can I feed the mother a wounded cricket with the babies on her or should I wait until they start to leave her back? How many babies did your scorp produce btw?

Hi Yve
Congrats!

I had an emp. give birth to 17 young ones. But it was two years ago, and I had her in an open top cage on vermiculite (can you say WRONG?) Things were OK for a couple weeks, I offered lots of squished crickets but bothered her way too much I'm guessing. She went nuts one day and started eating her brood. I battled her with spoon, but only managed to save six babies. A couple of those got trampled by the psycho mom and died. It was a total failure.
I hope you post about their progress, since I'd like to hear about how scorps in a DECENT cage will do. I didn't have internet back then, and couldn't read about care or caging for emps.
Best of luck to you.
D.

i say let nature take its course and let the babies leave her back on their own then sperate them from the tank.....but a word of caution.....be carefull of crickets...feed one cricket at a time...crickets will not hesitate to eat baby scorpions. trust me..it happened to my baby asian forest scorpions. good luck

Oh Dragoon! that sucks...sounds like my first scorps pregnancy...the flat rock...I found her babies scattered and squashed all over her tank, I tried to save two by putting them in a icu but they died after 2 weeks. I'm hoping I'll have better luck with the emperor.
this is the scenario so far.. She's the only adult in the tank and the humidity is very high and so is the temp(92-95)...substrate is peat and soil. I noticed the babies 6 days ago. I fed her one squash headed and legless cricket yesterday and today. She snapped it up off the tongs real quick! I've also covered her hide with a flattened out peat moss pot to give her more security...she is very defensive when I open the lid.

Adam, I think I will leave the babies with her unless I see some cannibalism occuring. There is always someone home to peak in on them. We can get an idea if there is something amiss without opening the tank. Plus, I am anxious to see the relationship between mother and offspring.

Hey Yve, I never actuall took them off her back. In about two weeks they will start to wander. When you see them wandering more and more, just collect them. She will get less defensive in time and with food :P

thanks Linds:)

well, I've sorta gone against some peoples recommendations and kept the babies with mom....as mentioned before, there's always someone home checking on them so if scorpling numbers start declining I'll remove the mother. The babies have molted and the majority have burrowed under the hide that the mother is in....there are 10 babies that I can see. I have been dumping squashed large crickets to the mother for about a week now...I can't see whats going on inside but I think she may be feeding the young because she turns towards the back of the hide where some babies are hanging out...:)....the majority are under the hide and when i checked on them last they were swinging fists and munching on baby criks (I've been throwing small criks in live as well to get them hunting). I tried to get some more pics of the babies but they are blurry and I don't want to bug them anymore.. I'll try taking better pics once they are out and about. Oh ya.....something cute that i saw...one of the babies was at the entrance to the hide when a itty bitty cricket hopped in front of it....well that lil' scorp went scurrying back under momma like greased lightning!:D uhh...so precious!
