My leo is in great health as far as I can tell but I bought it one of those hiding caves that have the two halves...one inside and one outside that attach with magnets. Well it loves it as far as I can tell but now it seems that its always in there except when it comes out to eat, drink or go to the washroom...is this ok or normal? Also how often you take your gecko out to handle and does it come very willingly?

Thanks for any comments...

i dont know alot about Leo's however i'm pretty sure that the are nocturnal. so your little guy is probably coming out to roam his cage at night while your sleeping..

i have one of those rocks as well, and my leo will stay in there for most of the day, when i get home around 5, he will come out cause he knows it is feeding time, as well that's when i clean his cage and stuff like that. Once mine is out, he will normally go over to the hot side and stay there for most of the night, sometimes in a hide over there but for the most part he just lays out in the light. As for handling, i do handle my leo for a bit on his off feeding days.

What are you temps on the hot side, maybe it is to hot for him and he just wants to hide out on the cool side all the time because of the heat. They are nocturnal animals so they will be out during the night more then the day as well.

They'll tend to hide more as babies. My adult is probably out of his hide basking just as much as he is in his hides, I see him often during the day.

klein asked a good question. It's true that if one side is really too hot or cold, they will avoid it by staying on the other. I had this problem when I had to use an overhead lamp with not long enough of an enclosure to create a heat gradient with it.

Handling- it seems they usually come out willingly, it depends on how often they're handled (remember they're usually born nervous of us) and sometimes comes down to individual temperament. I've noticed when I do not handle mine as regularly, he's not as comfortable with it, and usually he is very 'whatever' about what you do around him :D

Most of mine come out when they hear me in the room, but some are very much the nocturnal creatures. I start handling mine within a week or so of hatching. Lowering my hand in so they get familiar with me. By the time they are a couple of months old they practically run up my arm as soon as my hand goes into the enclosure.
If the temps are off you could notice that they never seem to be on the side that isn't quite right. What are you using to take your temps and where are you taking it (ie surface or side of enclosure). It's amazing what a difference a couple of degrees can make to these little guys. :)

Have two of those stick on thermometers like the ones on fish tanks...that change colours depending on the temp. I have one at the hot end and one at the cooler side...have temps going from 25-29 in day and lower at night...

This is Zilla my leo...named after Godzilla...lol

My female is usually outside of her hide, she actually sleeps by her water dish. She'll wake up when I walk into the room, and will follow my every movement. :)

I have had two females who came out ALL THE TIME! They were always out exploring and stuff.

My newest female never comes out. I thought it was just a baby phase but a year later she is still very shy. They have their own personalities.

i wouldn't be to worried until they stop eating and/or start to lose weight which could be part of the problem for them hiding(parasites, temp, husbandtry, etc), but if all that is fine, then as Marisa said they have their own personalities
