What an interesting cornucopia of critters I have in my sink drain, this guy thought he'd pop out and say Hello tonight:

Nice little boxing gloves you put on him :P

Is that what they call a 'wolf spider'?
I read they get quite large, and make good pets. How big is that one? And do the boxing gloves mean its a mature male, like T's ?
Will you be keeping him?

I still have my pretty spider that came in with the oak leaves I got for my monitors. Its been about six months now. He eats well, but I have not seen him shed. I call him 'Forrest', hahahaha
I keep catching jumping spiders, but none last more than three months, to my dismay...

Thanks for the awesome photos!

I believe it is a male Trochosa terricola. He wasn't too big, maybe 1.5". I didn't keep him. I gave him a cricket, which he relished, then I scooped him into my hand and took him outside.

Ha ha ha, well here's the latest arthropod to be stimulated out of it's hiding place due to the recent warm weather. This guy is about 10mm and I found him on my wall. I have no idea what he is, but he looks kind of neat:
http://home.cogeco.ca/~rbolton1/Folder/House%20Spider%201.JPG
He looks furry, no?

great pics! I tried to photograph a household spider the other day but it wouldn't stop running...needless to say the pics were garbage..lol..

Oh, for sure, I know what he is...
Its the almond-butted spider, nice specimen, too.

Or, umm...a hornet that lost its wings?

What a neat toy your camera is, it reveals a whole new world we'd otherwise miss (or squish). Who knew housespiders could be furry?:)

I love my camera! It totally doubles as a magnifying glass - I just take a macro pic and let the critter go, I can then go to my comp and comfortably marvel at the creature.
I don't think I have an infestation, I am just very perceptive - that and I would rather take a pic and release instead of squish and flush ;)

Ryan

This is my favourite creature that I have found in my basement. I am the Jacques Cousteau of subterranean dwellings!
The House Centipede (Scutigera coleoptera):

If you guys go looking around your home you'll find these things too! I am not kidding either....(probably something you didn't want to know).

When I was going to college, I had this crappy little basement apartment in the Annex in Toronto (not a residence kind of gal). I used to get them sometimes, they're huugggeee! Very creepy IMO. I am not really afraid of bugs but those would make my skin crawl! Awesome pics though!

I've found about 50 moults of those things in my basement! LOL. I agree with Ryan!

DONT LET THE BEG BUGS BITE! haha, just had to finish it.

Cool pics :) *shudder* :D

Not a bug person either, but it's nice to be able to look at the pics rather than find it crawling across my face.

I did a short stint in Ottawa in the winter of '91. If anyone is familiar with the slum hotel at Rideau and Chapel, I was on the 13th floor. When I opened the cupboard door under the sink, there would be a mad rush by the cockroaches to all get through the hole that the water pipe came through. Easily 200-300 roaches visible every time.

I had to sleep with the lights on at night, because if I turned them off they crawled all over everything, me included. Nothing like turnin on the lights and seeing them scatter from the bed.

Thats sick! Haha, i can stomach almost anything but bugs crawling on me when im unnaware, that just creeps me out.

I found this guy down-stairs last year. It's a Woodlouse Hunter (Dysdera crocata); oddly enough, given everything I've found, I've yet to see a Woodlouse down there....:

Edit: After months of believing that I had identified this spider correctly I now realize I was wrong. Finally I can say with great certainty that this arachnid is a Broad-Faced Sac Spider (Trachelas tranquillus).

Whoa you've found some awesome creatures in your place. Being in the basement I find spiders a good bit, or my cat points them out and I go to investigate, but that house centipede is freaky! I have never seen one of those things! Awesome pics though! :) What camera are you using?

Cruciform,
I don't let much bother me, but oh god, the thought of cockroaches crawling on me while I'm trying to sleep is enough to even freak me out! lol

Ryan, what is the camera you are using?

Also, I will send you a pic of a spider I got in a shipment of crickets, maybe you will be able to identify it. It's odd enough not to say ugly lol.

I'm fine with most bugs, and most centipedes as well, however... those freakin house centipedes scare the hell out of me! They remind me of giant running furballs with all those legs. I don't know what I would do if I found one IN my house

Those are crazy-sick photos.. the spiders are kinda freaky and the centipede is just down-right UGLY! What about millipedes, though? In my backyard, there are TONS of millipedes but are super small... they're like, jet black and are no bigger than 4cm long... anybody know what they are?

Those spiders are wicked looking, I wouldn't want one crawling on me though. I had a spider much like the one in the first photo fall off of my head when I was brushing my hair, and into the bathroom sink. I love tarantulas and scorpions, but, that spider freaked me right out.

In the summer we get these spiders that build five foot webs inbetween the posts. they wouldnt be so bad if they werent so FREAKIN UGLY and only visible when you suddenly stop and theyre an inch off your nose!

Those house centipedes are absolutly harmless..... They are just as good to have around the house as spiders are........ Hey RM, I think the reason you have not found any wood lice around is because you have the hunters down there... ;).... Those are great pics for a point and shoot camera...... I have the same camera as well, and I also have the tele lens and the 52mm close up...... I took a pic of a millipede that was about the size of a match head when it was rolled up....... The detail is awesome..... I am guessing you have the close up lens as well.....

Nope, that's the stock camera but it's on manual mode for most of those pics so it took some fiddlin' to get them right. I have looked into getting the 52mm close-up and the conversion lens... we'll see....

Yeah I don't know what those little guys are, but I used to keep a small colony of about 40 or so. I always just call them Common Milipedes, can't really go wrong with that since that's what they are...lol :p I don't actually know the real name for them though. I find them all dried out in my basement sometimes too.

Yeah I've noticed a lot of those little black millipedes out on the front walk lately. I've never noticed them before. There are a lot of them.

Wow! I love that little guy with the green chelicera (is that what you call that part of the spider???)! I really enjoy the little jumping spiders we have around here. I saw a show once that had different types of spiders communicating with one another by waving their pedipalps(?). They will even react to computer generated images of spiders waving. You can actually get them to wave back at you if you flick your finger in the same rythym. I don't know what I'm saying in spiderese but I'm guessing it's something along the lines of "hey you little spider".

Now the centipedes give me nightmares! I used to live in a 200 year old home and they would come crawling out of the cracks between the floor boards at night. They're so fast, and just the rippling movement of all those legs creeps me out.

There's actually a lot of behavioural research out there on these guys, nothing too novel - but they do have an intricate communication system. Interestingly, a little tephritid fly (Zonosemata vittigera) exhibits a type of protective mimicry whereby it communicates a dishonest signal to avoid predation. This fly will extend it's wings (which are patterned like a certain species of Jumping Spider) and wave them around at other Jumping Spiders (a known predator). The flies can mimic the threat displays of other Jumping Spiders so effectively that the would-be predator usually retreats. So the poor Jumping Spider's communication strategy ends up deceiving it....

R

Woah! That Phidippus audax is really neat looking, and 'cute', as spiders go anyways. :) That particular Jumping Spider is fairly aggressive, is it not?

that close up shot of the centipedes body is starting to gross me out, i mean, if you look at vietnam centipedes, they have these cool plates, but these guys look like they have a slimy skin on them! Hey, ever tried cutting one in half with a pair of scissors or poking em with a pin? lol

Thanks,

i found a few of those in my house a while back. one was in my shoe (good thing i accidentally kicked it over) and one came out of my faucet in the shower.
