Yes, definitely Naja nubiae. Its a sister taxon to Naja pallida that was recently described by Wuester (2003), and occurs in Egypt, Chad, Sudan, Niger and Eritrea.

It differs from Naja pallida by having more than one throat band, as well as throat spots.

Oh, You guys are far more smarter than I thought. For all who said Nubian Cobras, You are correct!!! You win a spit in the eye. Scott is the proud father of one of them, Mardi Snipes, the other, and I may keep the third.

Ray, have you got any more of the Nubian Cobras available? I have a pair that I got 2 years ago when they were considered Mozambiques, but would like to have more. I would prefer a pair, but I will take whatever you have. What are they going for now? I paid $135 for mine. A friend of mine in upper New York has a few Nubians that he is working on breeding this year. If you still have my number please give me a call. I can paypal you the $ tomorrow.
Thanks
Jerry

Augh, spitters. I hate working with those guys and ending up looking like I was on the set of a bad porno flick....stuff dripping from my forehead and my chin....bleh. I switched from goggles to a lightweight full face safety "spatter" shield. They are cheap and easy to obtain through veterinary/medical supply or even through Office Max or Office Depot. But it still sucks to work with spitters and I'd generally rather not.

I work with spitters when I have to.....which is to say when they come in sick or injured, or when a venom lab wants me to pick some up for them. But they are not my favorite animals. I really prefer to minimize my exposure to airborne venom so that I have less chance of going into anaphylactic shock in the event of an actual bite. Venom sprayed all around you or on you is not going to cause any envenomation, but it does increase your chances of developing an allergy down the road.

Spitters are like skunks. No matter how good a handler you are, there is only one reliable way to work an angry spitter without getting crap sprayed all over the place - anesthesia before the cage is opened by piping in isoflurane gas. I can't even get a fast jab in with the pole syringe on some of these guys without them spraying in the cage. The other precaution I could take is wearing a filter mask, but the really good ones are fairly pricey and impair vision to an extent I don't like. Anyhow the only reason I'd be handling a spitter would be because it needed vet care, so the anesthesia is a humane thing to do in any case.

A lot depends on the species and the temperment of the snake; there are a lot of captive raised spitters that act like corn snakes and will neither hood nor spit. There are some spitters that will absolutely drench you with repeated shots, spraying in the cage as soon as you walk into the room, and others even as wild caught adults that are reluctant to spray. I've never worked with the Nubian spitters before so I have no idea what their temperment is.

Actually they are rather common in collections but, were considered the nominate form until recently. It's only been since they were described as a vaild ssp. that people are looking more closely at the specimens already in their care. I know of at least 4 keepers and possibly five that have had them for years. Tannith.......we will never look at you the same. At least not and keep a straight face!!! LOL's!! Nice visual as mentioned!!!

Despite all of your dirty minds, I just don't think there is a market for a porno flick that involves spitting cobras. Sorry guys. I've heard of some weird fetishes but that one would just be too much. LOL

Actually, Ray, it was those f&^$%ed up little brown Javanese buggers I picked up from you guys at ERJ that did me repeatedly from forehead to chin. My goggles were so crusted with venom that I threw them away and bought a full face shield. My hair was actually stuck together from venom. I have never seen cobras spray so much and so often and with such good aim to the face.

Admit it, you put Viagra in their water and laughed your a$$ off before you sold them to me, didn't you? :p

While Naja nubiae is closely related to Naja pallida, it is actually evolving distinctively from the latter, and is thus a separate full species, rather than a subspecies.

In fact, Wuester & Broadley (2003) found Naja nubiae to be more distantly related to Naja pallida than Naja mossambica is to Naja nigricollis, two clearly distinct species.

Hah. Well it's all your fault anyways for selling me those evil little buggers. LOL They were supposed to go to George Van Horn but when I brought them over he said they were the wrong species. So I got stuck with them for awhile until I got them unloaded. That's the last time I will ever pick up spitters for anybody. **grumble**
