The Ackie (Varanus acanthurus) is one of the more common small monitors, although ther are others.

I think that is the info you are looking for.

I had heard that the timor's monitor was the smallest, buty a quick web search tuns up brevicauda (short-tailed monitor) as the smallest.

Ackies and timors are roughly the same size (avg 20-24inches). Brevicaudas are much smaller.

depending on what petstore, about 150-250... CDN.

Personally, I wouldnt recommend timors to anyone.... Keeping them and seeing them are two different things. I use to keep a few, never saw them.... They ate well and everything but never came out, and would dash like crazy if I did get a chance to see them.. If you want an aboreal species get a Beccari, very good display animals, handlable and stay a decent size.

I'd avoid either of those, as they will be wild caught animals. Get yourself some acanthurus, or kingorum or one of the smaller captive bred species

No doubt the beccarii will be wild caught. Aren't most timorensis (all) that are currently being offered CB though?
If I remember correctly V.timorensis are protected by Indo law. That would mean the ones offered are either CB or Long term WC. Right?

timorensis are still imported. So are auffenbergi..........not many come into Canada though, not too sure why. From what I understand there is very limited quota issued for anything in the timorensis complex.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a quality Timor for under $350 CDN.

I say that a Timor would be a good species to keep. They are really hardy and a little flighty...But they calm down with time. When I first got mine, he was really sketchy and even nippy at times. After about 6 months though, he was almost to the point of handling with ease.

Sure they are still imported... they are being bred at a farm in Indo together with the baby Varanus melinus that are regularly being offered (Bushmasters)
I'm pretty sure there's no quota for V.timorensis being issued.

You have more faith in the care Indonesia has for its wildlife than most, I'd say. I really can't imagine timorensis being 'farmed'.

Hey question is how much better would a farm raised specimen be than its wild-caught counterparts? I'd suggest that these farms are full of poorly kept animals, with a "bare-minimum" attitude.

Either farmed or exported illegally. Timorensis are fully protected by Indonesian law. Would love to see a copy of the CITES they came in with.
