View Full Version : Just in time for Easter..
So, 20 days ago my Dad (who has a hobby farm) came to me and asked me if i would put some chicken eggs in the incubator for him.. Since i wasn't expecting any eggs from anything, i said what the he!!, and did it for him.. This morning i woke up to a slight chirping sound.. Here's what i opened the incubator to see..

There's a few more that are starting to show themselves now too.. Maybe i'll get some pics when they decided to come out of the egg.. :D Pretty fun to watch though...

thats cool! Did you turn them and all that stuff?
Dont they incubate around 100F??
Yeah Roy, turned them and everything.. They incubate at about 103º. It's a pretty neat process to watch (the hatching) its the chirping that gets to you.. LOL
Okay, so this little bugger must have known i was posting pics and made a mad dash to come out of the egg before the other one (pictured above)...

Awwww -- so ugly, yet so cute! LOL... Be sure to get some pics once they're all hatched and dried off and actually CUTE looking ;)
In Grade 7 we hatched a bunch of chicken eggs as part of science class... it was really cool :) We kept the babies around for a few weeks after they hatched... we'd take turns having them at our desks and stuff... my favourite was the cutest one of course ;) They were so damn cute...
Thanks for sharing Matt -- now get some sleep! LOL... they'll hatch without you watching over them, I promise ;)

Depends what you consider a lot.. Personally, i consider 5 too many.. But there's i believe, 55 in there.. One out, and 5 more close to being out and about 10 that have cracked the shell.. So, right now, at 4:15am i am listening to 16+ baby chicks chirping.. Nothing will stop it either.. Unless i decided to house them with the snakes. :D
Are you keeping them?

That's cute. All babies are cute. :)
What are you going to do with 55 chicks running around until your dad picks them up? :D
Friends of mine hatched a couple dozen chicks in the oven. With the oven light on, it was just the perfect temperature, and they could watch the hatching through the door window. (She never cooked anyways, so there was no problem with the stove being off limits the whole time) :p

heheh! Chickens are such awesome critters. ^^ I want one. heheh....
Never heard of anyone useing the oven... o.o; We use ours entirely to much to even dream of that! heheh!
Are you keeping them?
I have no idea what he's doing with them...

Well, he lives here, so i don't have to worry about him taking his time in removing them. LOL, i already threatened to move them into my mom and his room cause they kept me up so late and then woke me up this morning at 5:30 by coming down to see if any had hatched..
Cool, hatching anything is pretty exciting. I hatched a bunch of button quails a while ago; they are absolutely adorable when they are babies, they would easily fit into a bottle cap. Now that they are fully grown, I wish one of my snakes would eat them just to shut them up.
Matt, do you have a heat lamp over them? I raised 25 in my house until they were big enough to go outside and I found that they chirp a lot more when they are hungry or cold.

I was just going to ask about the heat light thing.
Out here, in hickville, many people hatch chicken eggs. They "brood" the babies under a "brooding" light. Usually a 250 watt that is hung 3 feet over the floor. But maybe it is only for night, as it is usually done in a chicken coop (a small barn for chickens).
I nearly choked on my coffee when you said you had them set up in rubbermades. Like Linds said, "you know your a herper when".

That's wicked Matt! I was actually thinking of trying that when I settle down somewhere. I don't know if it's true, but somewhere I remember hearing in Ottawa you can have up to 3 chickens in your backyard if you're not a farm. I don't know what I'd do if a rooster popped out though cuz he'd wake the whole neighborhood up each morning.
Martin
hmm snake food!! :) I wonder if I can convince my kids to want chicken eggs to hatch out.. that whole "gampa, pwease pwease pwease" with a pouty lip and all ;)
would beat having rats around here again..
Syco and Ryan.. Yes, they do have Heat Lamps now.. I took the one out of the rubbermaid yesterday and put him back into the incubator (cause it was warmer).. I now have 3 out of the egg all dried up and in a rubbermaid with a lamp on them, they're still chirping, but not as much.. Now i just have to move them somewhere else so i dont have to listen to them much longer.. LOL..
Matt pretends he doesn't like it but we all know he is in there right now being the momma hen and cuddling them.
:P
Marisa
My thoughts exactly. *awww this one's to cold come sit in my lap*
Matt
LMFAO, Marisa thinks she's got jokes..
Matt.B: im not gonna touch that one dude..

And here's another one that has dried up and looks normal..

Sorry for the crappy pics, but they wouldnt sit still.. Of course now, they're lying under the heat lamp soaking up some heat though..
what do the temps need to be?
Matt
OMG! So cute Matt! I wish I could have those chicks!!! Which type of chicken will they turn out to be?
Marisa
Holly cow...
55 eggs...imagin what would happen if all 55 of them were to hatch out and start chirping....
I think that it would be a good idea to get some good sleep while you can.....
those pics of the chicks are cute. One or two of them chirping is going to be alright....lol....when 55....(sorry had to repeat myself...that's a bit too much....)
hope that your dad removes them before all hatchs out and start the 'band'....
Oh, trust me Simon, they won't all be in here when they hatch.. There's 6 hatched right now, and im already pushing to move them out.. They're not so bad right now, they seem to be more intent on sleeping..
Matt.b: I have them at the same temp as the incubator.. 103º but, they can go to cooler spots, which they have been doing, they spend some time under the light, then off the to side..
Have they eaten yet?
Matt
one more question are they temp sexed?
Matt
lol, i have no idea dude.. i just hatched em :D
