Sometimes live sometimes fresh killed....... Alot of protines and other important nutriants get lost from freezing........ That particular shot was a live feeding.....

How much time after a bite does it take for an average size rat to die? (talking about an adult gaboon bite)

SnowSnake,
It takes anywhere from 10 to 40 seconds before it stops kicking...... I do not think it is the venom its self that works that fast....... It is the combination of the venom plus the massive fangs....... They usually hit the rat around mid body and puncture the heart and lungs........ In the pic above you can see where the fangs are going........ I think this kill took around 15 seconds....... Pretty fast eh???? LOL

AWESOME GREGG! So if it would take about 10-40 seconds to kill a rat. What kind of shape would a Human be in After 10-40 seconds after a bite?

That I do not know off hand Brandon.......LOL....... I would have to say a human would be in ok shape after 10 to 40 seconds, but 10 to 40 minutes can be enough time to kill someone depending on the type and location of the bite and the size of the human......... An IV bite can kill someone pretty fast especially when there is a cytotoxin (affects the heart) pumped directly into the blood stream........ IM bites are pretty bad too......... If bitten by a venomous snake, one would hope for a sub cue bite (under or just past the skin layer).......... But with an adult gaboon it is not likely you will get a sub cue bite........ It would more likely be on of the two mentioned before........

Hey Kim,
The one in the pic is over 5.5ft long and about 15 to 20 pounds...... They have been known to get close to 7 ft long...... But I am sure the average is around 5 to 6 ft........ East African gaboons average alittle bit smaller than the West African gaboon.....

I've had the chance to keep a Gaboon once and unfortunitly I ended up by losing it to a nasty resperatory infection. It did eat very well though right up until the day that I lost it (dam that makes me mad just to think about it) The kills were pretty quik and not to mention they hit the rat with such force I don't even think they know what hits them. I have seen however my copperheads and rattlers bite mouse while it had jumped and the mouse was laying stone dead when it hit the bottom of the enclosure. Just to say how fast venom can work.
