The local shop told me to use this substrate for my corn, but it kind of reminds me of cedar (which I know is toxic to snakes). There are absolutely no labels on the bag (other than price). It's a little damp. Can anyone tell what it is? (sorry about the pic, it's huge, yet blurry)

I doubt it's home made. It's probably more like "marked up" by the shop. It is some sort of bark/mulch, but there are big chunks in it. Some are about the size of my thumb.

I'd give them a call or pay them a visit and ask them.

I would call it safe and go with aspen or paper sibstrates (paper towel or newspaper). I copied your pic to my computer and shrunk it, and it looked a lot like cypress or some other mulchy wood chip substate, although truthfully it is about impossible to tell even that way. Give them a call and ask? I recommend using aspen. Cheap, easy and reliable.

I'd say Cypress mulch. I don't personally like using it because of all of the sharp edges. I had a boa constrictor get some of that stuck between his scales, and he expressed visible displeasure when I pulled it out. Go with shredded aspen - absolutely the best bet for corns.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to look for some Aspen ASAP. I tried to find a good corn snake book, but Borders didn't have much. Maybe I'll check out Amazon or Barnes and Noble next.

A really good substrate that I've been using for all my corns is beta chip. Its a hardwood product and dust free. I now have all my colubrids on it. Aspen is also excellent for corns. Regards Grant

Looks like "Forest Floor" to me.
