Should I wait until the snake is actively searching for food before I offer it something to eat? or Should I just leave the food item once a week regardless of searching or not? Thanks for any replies.

You "should" offer it food semi regularly. That’s not to say "very Tuesday at 7:30 PM on the dot” but every few days for sure. I would suggest one food item every 5-7 days. The food item "should" be 1.5 x the snake's fattest part. That, again, is not a rule but more of a guideline. There’s room to play with those sizes and the frequency when you get to know your snake’s habits a bit better.
Good luck. :)
Agree with Tim. :)
Just toss it a prey item every 5-7 days that leaves a nice lump for a couple days and you'll be good.

We feed youngsters on a regular schedule because it works for us - as has been said - every 5-7 days. Ours have usually been cruising around more for a day or so before that, but behaviour varies a lot, some snakes are very shy and may not cruise until later at night, so if you wait to see the behaviour, you might miss it.
We find that most of ours don't even come out of their hide for 2 days after feeding, then by the fourth day they have been out and pooped, by 5-7 days they are patrolling the cage (see tunnels and pathways in the bedding for those that are shyest) and actively searching unless they are coming in to a shed.
With adult snakes that have completed their growth you may not be feeding as often as once a week - many of ours are fed only every other week for maintenance.
