Who might have one sex and not realize it or have either and never know which it is. That and to share my experience as I got something that Ive only tried a few times in 12 years figured out.

I gave a description of the procedure to evert, it seems to be much the same way as you, I must have sexed 100 monitors this way, and to my knowledge never injured any.
Furthermore this method when performed with common sense is much safer then saline injection used by vets, its also less stressful and more reliable then X-rays.
Finally gently press your thumb on your desk, the pressure needed for it to turn white can be counted in ounces not ponds, the human fingers are precision instruments that can feel heat, pressure, texture and instantly adjust to your brains commandments, so unless you’re a total moron hurting your loved animal is unlikely. You’ve been keeping monitors 12 years before you attempted to do this, it doesn’t look like an act of carelessness to me, I say bravo! New keepers shod look up to guys like you for such advanced task, and not try this before consulting.

That they dont want others to know how to recognize the sex of their monitor. Im not sure why. As I said before every few weeks someone asks about sexing their monitor, they say "something popped out its vent and I think its a male because of that but I want to know how to tell them apart", so I posted a pic or 2 of salvators for that reason and I have pics of Albigularis, and Exanthematicus (not a very good picture). On some species I couldnt tell you which is which but many I can tell what they are by seeing a FULL eversion. IOve tried many times to get pics of natural eversions of male and female Albigs but the camera is too slow to catch it.

These are only partial eversion pics, a full eversion is larger and the flowered end is huge.

Interesting to compare your larger whitethroat to my small blackthroat. I don't see the spur on your whitethroat like on my blackthroat.

I noticed it before. Thats Shadow my F1 generation Rob Faust cross, the one that was for sale as a female on his sight for so long, the unusual charcoal colored 2 ft 2+ year old. I told Rob when Shadow picked up weight his tail mysteriously inflated huge and he everted in front of me full eversion a few times, he didnt believe me that Shadow was male, but then said "Im sorry I sold him as a her", I told him I didnt care that my big huge male F2 cross (BT/WT/WT) was a female. She almost killed him after introduction so they stay apart from each other. Shadow is Sobeks half brother / Uncle, a year and 14 days older than her. Hes now 4 ft long and doing good, but hes a special case he needs food held in front of him and several attampts to eat, he reacts weird to dead food, live food he kills and eats. I believe the physical deformities and his appearant mental "retardation"/ hyperactivity had to do with bad incubation. I believe Steve mentioned this recently, awhile back FR told me the same thing.

I would like to add, while its true that monitors can be pooped and accurately sexed this way, this procedure holds some risk, the hem pens internal structure hold a bone, the base of this bone is made of cartilage similar to the tip of your nose, this cartilage can be damaged especially in younger monitors, also damages to blood vessels is possible, once the sex is determined then re-sexing the animals is obsolete. Females will evert too, however I wasn’t able to evert them manually as they don’t have the same muscles as males do, there hem clitoris are much paler in coloration as theirs less blood, they typically end like a worm not a flower shape of males.
For those wandering how painful and stressful this can be, I once everted a male monitor and he fed upon release, He laterally took rat pups as I returned him to his cage.

Hello jungle shadow nice to see you here! Why didn’t you keep your nice name?

Is that an emerald monitor on your avatar? It looks nice.
As for popping, that can be done easily and harmlessly with the help of monitor viagra(C) :D Just kidding!

SHvar, I really like the last pic of your albigularis! Nice and snug:)

Hi all,

For reference sake on hemipene morphologies of most Varanus, Thomas Ziegler and Wolfgang Bohme wrote a lengthy paper on what each Varanus and other Platynotan lizards hemi-structures look like, both in photo and illsutration of each. The paper is in german language but the pictures and illustrations are in both english/german....

Ziegler, T. and W. Bohme. 1997. Genitalstrukturen und paarungsbiologie bei squamaten reptilien, speziell den platynotan mit bemerkungen zur systematik. Mertensiella 8:1-210.

This Mertensiella issue can be purchased from DGHT (use google if you like for web page) for 40....well worth it for serious varanophiles...and will easily explain why/how you can cross certain varanids and not others by hemi-stuff....i.e. key and keyhole analogy. So here is a Vara-***** book for all of you to review....

cheers,
markb
