I have a hard decision to make...

I bought two female carpets about 3 or 4 months ago. I was planning on building a trio in order to be able to breed one litter a year and giving each female a year off after she bred. But I decided recently that 1 litter every two year would be more than enough for the types of projects I have.... So.

I need to let one female go.

But I don't know which one.

The 1st pic is carpet #13 (number that came form the breeder)
She's really calm, never bit me and she's pretty enough.

2nd pic is carpet#7
She's really nippy. I'm trying to calm her down but she's a really stressed individual :)
She use to bite me at least 3 to 5 times everytime I handled her but now she's down to one :)
I find her more attractive than #13, but she has a bad attitude.

The breeder told me that the Mom is an agressive snake and that Dad was pretty calm. So I can't really rely on genetics to predict my snakes future attitude.

The big question is..... I like #7 better, but I really want a docile carpet since I have kids in the house and I plan in letting them handle any snakes we own one time or another. Is this behaviour a typical baby carpet attitude and they ALL calm down one time or another ?

Or If I prefer a calm snake, Am I taking a chance if I keep #7 ?

thanks

Heya Wyz!! Well I believe Carpets are nippy by nature, but I don't own one so.. I couldn't say from experience.

Personally, I would keep the calm one, i personally like it better...

I'm not sure but Ithink your illistration pics were backwards of your comment at the end, again I may just be reading it wrong. Either way snakes in general calm with more handling, if she is down to one bite per handling if you keep on handling her she will calm down. ALL baby carpets are nippy, some more than others. This usually clars up with frequent handling no matter how nippy they are, but some just want to be left alone. Even if they never calm down the temperment won't be passes genetically so she would still make a good mother. Personally I like the 2nd pic better as far as breeding would go.

# seven is prettier in my opinion. I only have one jcp, and she is a little brat, she bites me about 10 times before she realizes it doesn't do anything :p So, I'm guessing most jcp hatchlings are just nippy; I mean, they have to be, it's their only defense, you know? I would think she'll tame down with more handling, and as for breeding, # seven is prettier. :)

Wyz, I think we bought our jcp's from the same breeder. And I also have a little nippy male. I will trade him for your male, and buy your calm female, this way you get hte nippy ones ;-)

They will calm down, the female I have is already very tame and I barely handled her, just her seeing me in the room a lot calmed her down and she doesn't bite. The male is a little nippy still but they will calm down. Just handle them but not too often either.

If you decide to sell the female, let me know, might be interrested in her.

Not ALL carpets are nippy. Of the four Irian Jaya and six Jungles I have had only one was nippy when small. IMO they get a bad rap because they always look like they are going to get you!

both my male and femle were nippy. I bought mine around the same time as you. the male is still jumpy but doesnt bite. The female has calmed down alot too but I still get the ocassional bite. I handle them every other day for about 1/2 hour and it seems to have helped. If its a breeding project you want I would go with which ever one looks best. If its a pet take the calmest one. just my inexperienced 2cents

I would keep number 7, the bottom pic. Its pattern looks a little cleaner, but that could just be the pics. They'll calm down almost without exception, as long as you handle them occaisionally. Just spend the time, the bites don't hurt at all when they're small. They more scare ya than anything.

I would keep #13 for only one reason if the are sisters the you know that the parents had teh potetial to give sweet looking babys I remember Jeff Favelle saying somthing abot Dark Carpet pythons you do not know what exactly she is hiding in here DNA If I were you I would keep #13 and pay the extra couple of hundred of bucks and get the brightes Male Jeff hase to offer when he breed again this season cause even if your female is a year older then your male no big deal cause Males attain sexual maturaty B4 females do any way so 1 in one year your male is ready to rock and your female had all the time she needs ti get ready Now I might be wrong But That was my understanding of his info if you keep #7 let me know how much you want for #13 and I will give it a Try.
