View Full Version : Borneo question.
Ok im interested in getting a borneo here soon but want some feedback.
I have experience with the following snakes:
Ball pythons
Jungle carpet pythons
Pueblan milk
Im having a hard time choosing between a borneo or a irian jaya for my next snake. For some reason im intimidated by borneo's and i dunno if i should be or if thats just silly.
I know i can provide the right setup and everything for him its just mainly that i feel kinda scared about them lol i think its because they look so mean and i have heared alot of people say they can be nippy.
Im willing to be bit and i know i shouldnt be keeping snakes if im scared to be bit but thats not what im saying. I just want to know if this snake is trustive because to me they look kinda evil in a way lol.
Any personal info would be great. I have read the care sheets and asked questions but now i want to hear from people that have had or have one as of now.
thanks, hello
Borneos are amazing, rewarding snakes to keep, however they demand a lot of respect. These are incredibly powerful constrictors, that despite their cumbersome appearance, are lightning fast. They tend to be somewhat more sensitive in terms of temperament... quite vocal, easier to set off than most species, etc. As for can you trust this snake? No. You cannot trust any snake and in fact I find short-tails to be even less predictable than the average snake. Would it be possible for you to arrange a handling session with someone who has an adult blood or short-tail? This may help you with your decision. They are wicked snakes, but definitely not for everyone, and can most certainly be intimidating, nothing silly about feeling that way. They are very powerful. You can't get the impression until you feel it in your hands. It is incredible. They can be nippy, if you do decide to get one, make sure you get a captive bred hatchling and work with it from there. That gives you the best chances of having a handleable adult. Even still it's no guarantee though. They all seem to have their days...lol  :p
I knew about their nasty reputation before I got mine. He is the most mellow snake I've ever had. He eats like there's no tomorrow, is easy to handle. With the right husbandry and the same common sense that goes with any snake, there's no reason that a borneo wouldn't be a good snake for you to keep.

look at it this way..
if your brother/sister-in-law out of the blue dumped there 5 yr old temper-tantrum throwing kid on you, you probably wouldn't know how to deal with the kid as well as say it was your child and you raised it up from a baby.
You'd know what keeps the kid calm, keeps him happy, and what to do when he gets out of hand.
Same thing goes for bloods. Start with an adult, and no matter how calm it usually is, if it has a bad day, you can bet you'd be scared sh!tle$$ and would not know how to control the situation.
Start with a CB baby however, and its easy as pie.
they dont grow huge overnight (except for linds', but im sure she feeds her rodents some type of radioactive rodent chow) but anyways...lol
If you like the borneos, buy a cb baby, preferably one thats eating regularly and one that doesn't only have a few meals in it. Handle it regularly and grow it up from the get-go and you will be fine!
guaranteed!!
I agree with linds, handle an adult if you have the chance. BUT, remember, thats not YOUR "5 yr old kid", yours will be yours.
goodluck!

Thanks a bunch for all the replies :)
I will go with the borneo and buy me a baby male that is eating good and from there i will handle it just like i do all my other snakes so that it tames down or becomes used to me a bit.
Ill be sure to post pics when i get him so everyone can see which will probably be in the next week or two.
Thanks, hello
lookin foward to some pics, I would also love to grab a borneo in the future.

I have a 1.1 pair of borneos. the male I have will let you know who is the boss if you reach in to his cage. But the female I have is the most mellow dog tame snake I have. I also have 0.2 marble borneo babies i picked up this year. I am working with them to make them like the other female. handling the snake at the correct times will help to tame. Take the little bites. Id rather get bit by a baby borneo 20 times to tame it then get bit by and adult once. take care Nick
