Just looking into some easy to clean (spot clean) alternatives to paper towels for my rack system

Has anyone used Pine shaving for leos, and is this safe (as safe as possible).

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The oils in the shavings are toxic to leos, and many other reptiles.

loose substrates let crix and other feeders hide really easily

Have you considered coconut bedding (like bed-a-beast or ecoearth)?

Thanks,

I'm with zoe on this one try bed a beast or eco earth. I personaly wouldn't use any type of wood shavings for my leos.

Newspaper is the simplest, cleanest and most cost effective.

If you're set against paper towel or newspaper, and your leos are 6 months or older -- give bed-a-beast or eco-earth a try...

you could use caramic tile, slate, other rocks, or the suggestons above.

if you use rocksbe sure they cannot be knocked ove or leo pancakes.

pine and cedar have ols that are badm for reptiles

thanks a lot for all the suggestions, but what do you think about the crushed walnut bedding that is available. Not sure of the name?

And don't worry no animals have gone into pine except for the feeder mice for my other herps..........

Crushed walnut bedding is a killer of lizards. It is NOT digestable despite claims made on the package. The pieces are also large and shaped in a way that they cause impaction very easily.

Lizard Litter?

I've had lizard litter start to build up. I had some of my sub adults on that stuff and in about a week i had to remove them and for a few days they were pooping that stuff. I won't use it at all!!!! I know of one member that uses it and likes it but i seen negative results when using it so i will never try it again. I'll stick to bed a beast, slate or a more natural rock. Oh and can never forget paper towels.

garg, both pine and cedar are toxic. I think aspen is the safest as far as wood shavings go, but I still wouldn't use it for leos.

It's a case by case situation.
We used crushed walnut bedding for over a year and a half. Out of the dozen geckos we had on it, 2 were eating some and we could see it in their excrements. We didn't take a chance,we switched them to the bead a beast or which ever coconut mulch you want and we had the same problem, some of them would eat some and they no not digest it so we changed again. We tried sans, calci-sand and always the same thing. We never got an impaction but we didn't take a chance. If you are using a rack system, the best is news paper, it's much harder for them to tear up a piece and eat it. The worse problem we got was some females eating vermiculite when they were laying their eggs. We soon put some earth in it. But still, they would eat the earth.
So you can try the bed a beast, check all your geckos and the ones who will eat it, change those ones for somethings else...
The wose would be sand, calci-sand. They do not digest crushed walnut, coconut mulch, and pine shedding neither.
I know of people who use pine shedding for a few years now and their gecko's didn't get poisoned...
