I was just wondering what you guys use for a humidified shelter, and are they a must? and what side should it be placed on, cold or hot ?
u can use tuppaware w/ a hole in it filled with vermiculite or some other thing that holds humidity well. put it on the hot side so that the water gets all condensated and what not. mainy it helps w/ shedding and egg laying

I've also heard that clean sphagnum moss is ok to use - anyone have an opinion on that?
I use spaghnum in a tupperware with a hole cut at the top. It is placed on the cool side, as I am against warm water (promotes bacterial growth)

Spaghnum moss in a tubberware is your best bet. :)

spagnum being acidic slows bacterial growth

I use sphagnum moss in an appropriate sized tupperware type plastic hide as well. Both my girls shed beautifully.

I use a 2L pop bottle with the neck cut off filled with sphagnum moss for my baby BP.

Hmm...I don't like spaghnum, crickets are always breeding in there. Try using vermiculite, perlite or paper towel. Keep the humid hide in the center of the tank where the temps are mid-ranged. A humid hide is very important, it helps shedding and also allows them to cool off quickly if they want to. Also they don't drink a lot of water and may enjoy the humidity for that reason. I usually buy small tupperware containers and cut a circle in the top. You can also use deli cups and any plastic food container, well washed (sour cream, yogurt, margarine..)

Hey Julie,
Some of the caresheets I have read indicate that a lot of Leos will eat Vermiculite sometimes, possible impaction issue aside, any other concerns? I intend to use it in my breeding boxes when the time comes, but don't want to have to worry about yet something else they may impact on that's in their cage :)

I have a lot of geckos, a lot:D and I've never had an impacted leo, and I use vermiculite in all my humid hides, as well as in my incubator. The only downside?.....they kick the stuff all over the place 15 minutes after you put it in!:D Litlle buggers, lol.
