hey im getting a JCP sometime in the next 2 months and eventually i am going to build a cage out of melamine, and im wondering how to heat it? ive thought of some ways, heat lamp = burnt snake and dry air? heating pad = no use because song JCP are rarely on the ground? i might be wrong but can someone please give me some ideas. thanks

Low wattage bulb over top a heat pad. Works like a charm. But you still won't be able to put the cage in a room that's under 65F. That's just a fact of life.

alright thanks jeff, another question i had is will a normal zoo-med heating pad (or other brands alike) heat the tank through the wood? and would I use normal bulbs like 60watt or heat bulbs?

Try it and find out FIRST HAND. Proof is in the pudding.

No. Low wattage bulb. Like a 25W bulb.
Your jcp may always be on the ground you just never know till you get them and let them settle in. Some stay up others stay down so give them the choice. Just get a sunbeam heat pad from wal-mart put it on low and throw it under the substarte that easy. Plus the bulb for ambient if it's not a heated room.

I personally don't like Zoo Med heat pads and IMO they get too hot. I don't think they work well with wood cages either. There are a lot of other options like flexwatt or a Cobra heat pad, a low wattage bulb, a low watt ceramic heat emitter, or a radiant heat panel.
Hey J. yeah those pads will def. need a therm. or reostat.

Im with JD on the zoomed pads being to hot. I use them for my corns and the temp on top of the substrate is fine but underneath itsover 100 and my snakes burrow. I use a rheostat now.
oops rheostat!! Man and it took me like ten minutes too peck out that sentence.

I use ceramics for mine!
I find a high wattage bulb .. on a rheostat that is covered by a metal grill works really well ..
Just the way I do it..

Do NOT get ZooMed heating pad! I have one for a 10-20 gallon tank and it got so hot that it burned my snake!

Heating pads are fine as long as you use a reostat your snake will not be hurt!
