I had a virus in my computer that infected alot. During my attempts to fix it I lost thousands of pictures, thats horrible!! I ended up saying screw it and put a whole new operating system and starting over again.

You can ALWAYS save your information by getting a new hard drive and setting the old one as a slave. The just go retrieve the info. I just set aside 10GB for my Windows directory and if I ever need to re-install, I just format that partition, and that partition alone. That way, I NEVER lose any information.

HI Steve,
Boy oh boy do I know this feeling and RAGE!!! I HATE COMPUTERS with a passion because of this....anything I have in my files, gladly send it again, if I have it as before calamity hit me too a few months ago....

Don't get too angry over this, save your energy.

Jeff that’s exactly what I did this time! I made an image of the system and set aside 5GB in a blind partition, so I don’t accidentally play with the damn thing, that’s excellent advising thanks.

The way I lost everything is plain stupid, somehow I managed to copy only links, therefore when I had my entire system upgraded to the new window 2003, all I hade left on my CD’S where links to nothing. My biggest problem is to copy from outlook express, it’s the second time I fail trying to copy my e-mails on a cd, I lost so many valuable e-mails its impossible to replace them.

Thanks for everything guys
Rgds

The inbox is hard to find man, but not impossible. Trust me. What you have to do, is go into Outlook and go to "Tools", then go to "Options" and then go to the "Maintenance" tab. Under that, click on the "Store Folder" button. From there, copy that URL into Windows Explorer and that will take you to the NEW inbox. It will be something like this: C:\Documents and Settings\JDF\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{3A644D9B-F407-4CB0-A7EE-785440B88267}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

That is your CURRENT inbox though. If you want you're old one, replace the "C:" with the drive it was stored on, and replace the computer username (found after "Documents and Settings". Mine was "JDF"). That will take you to your old folder, provided it was still there. Then, copy the old inbox.dbx file over the new one and voila! you have all your old emails back!

It took me a good 4 hours to figure it out by myself. Nerve-racking to say the least. Especially since the "Application Data" folder is hidden. You can't even find it in Windows Explorer.

Whoa man what language are you speaking? :D

Actually those directions are so good even I could follow them. But the whole 10 mb partition.......huh  I am not computer literate. TB

Ha ha, not to nitpick, but a 10MB partition wouldn't even hold 2 files!!! LOL! I don't think you can even make a partition that small.

Partitions are just a way of splitting your hard drive into smaller hard drives. Therefore, you can have a drive C: and a drive D: that are on the same actual hard disk, but can be formatted and erased separately. If you keep your operating system (Windows XP is best) on one partition (C: ) and your data on another (D: ), you can have your computer crash and still have all your data on D: when you reinstall.

But computers still suck lemons. :medyell:

OK I understand what you’re saying but unfortunately it’s now impossible to recuperate anything from my old system, as my PC was fully reformatted with Window office 2003 Professional, and my partition was deleted.

Thanks for giving me the info to Outlook, now IL makes sure I never lose any e-mails again!
You guys rock!

Oh Steve. ..

I too once lost all of my pictures and emails. I use outlook express, a cheap version of microsoft outlook. I was completely devastated, many of the emails were ones I still wish I had.

I have now found out how to save my emails with microsoft outlook (not as easy as outlook express).

I feel terrible for you, and will look for any pictures or info for you and send it back to you.
