Discussion Settled - One snke one enclosure
Just wondering about peoples thoughts on housing 2 JCP in the same enclosure. It's a male/female pair that I have no intention of breeding( at least not to each other).
I was looking at building a 3x2x2 enclosure for when the got older. Would that be big enough? Should I go 4x2x2 or bigger?
I do realise I would have to seperate them for feeding. I found that out when my corn snakes played tug-o-war with a fuzzy. could get either one to let go so I had to get the scissors in there and chop it in half, yuck! I'm sure i could rig up a pretty simple devider for this purpose.
Should I start housing them together as soon as I get them in thier temp rubermade enclosures or would they be ok to wait until they were bigger?

i know that it strongly *recommended* that u not house any type of snake together...but about the size of the the enclosure, u would need a 4x2x2 for a single adult to be comfortable so i would imagine u would need at least a 6x4x2 or something rather large for the two of them.

You have no intention of breeding them together but you're housing them together? Have you asked them to stay away from each other or something? If you don't intend on breeding them how can you expect them not to if they are in the same cage?

well from all the breeding instructions I've read on most snakes they seem to require a simulated seasonal change. From talking to others If that doesnt happen the breeding response isnt triggered. I belive its called Brumation? If they will just spontaneously breed then what would be the point to this?
Please corect me if im wrong. Also if im wrong will spontaneous breeding occur in my cornsnakes as well?

A good friend of ours kept 2 adult JCP together for years, until one day the female ATE the male. It was a single case of cannibalism, but he now houses them all seperately.

hehe OK well thats the best reason I've heard so far for not housing them together.
3 x 2 x 2 is the size for ONE JCP. You'd definitely need to go bigger if you were going to house two together, but you shouldn't do that anyway, for a number of reasons already mentionned. It's just no good for the snakes. If you want two, build two cages. If you can only build one cage, you can only have one snake.

The point is that that's how it happens in the wild. There are seasons in the wild, and that's how the snakes know when the breeding season. Some breeders cycle/brumate their snakes, but some don't, and the snakes breed anyway.
Some breeds of snakes need to be cycled to breed, but definitely not carpets.
Yup, expect your corn snakes to breed!

Brumation=hibranation and that is for colubrids and north american boas. Boid are cooled not brumated. Breeders cool and brumate their snakes to increase their chance of success and fertility, but make no mistake snakes will breed with out cooling or brumating. Sometimes it works in the breeders favour sometimes it doesn't. So just because your corns aren't brumated and your boids aren't cooled doesn't mean they won't breed.

cool thx for all the input people. I wasnt trying to cheap out just thought it might be cool. Way back lots of people told me it would be ok with the corns...including the breeder.
As much as would like to breed some snakes I dont want any unexpected surprises. My first priority is the snakes helth and safety.

mine were given to me by someone who said they were too agressive. they were kept together .i seperated them, gave them some time to adjust and with a little time and handling my 8 year old daughter handles the female. and she is the worst one of the two. they are much better apart and growing like crazy-f=5.5ft m=5 female is 30%heavier. if she wanted she could eat the other, or she thinks she can anyway.
