There are no dangerous snakes, just dangerous keepers. ;-)

Your question is relative. How dangerous they are depends on the hands they are in. A black Mamba in the hands of say Ray Hunter, is not as dangerous as a copperhead in the hands of a kid. If you are simply talking about danger potential, you have to look at venom potency, venom yield, propensity to bite, and availability of medical care. Take an eastern diamond back rattlesnake for example. The venom potency is low, but they can yield nearly 700ml of venom at a single extraction and have a high propensity to bite. With 100ml required to be lethal to an average adult, that gives them massive danger potential. However, there are very few deaths recorded by them because of easy access to advance medical care and effective anti-venom. If this same snake was indigenous to southern Mexico, the amount of deaths resulting from its bite would be much higher. Compare the EDB to the eastern coral. The venom is highly potent! However, the venom yield is very low and there is very little propensity to bite. As with the EDB, deaths are very rare due to quick access to medical care. The saw-scale viper kills more people then any other snake, however, the venom is much less potent then that is a Mamba or a Taipan. Their death totals are so high because they inhibit a vast range and much of that range covers very poor areas and they have a high propensity to bite. People do not have quick access to medical care or anti-venom, thus bites are often fatal.

sure my question was vague ill kinda reformulate... in the hands of expert or not , do any of you keep snakes that are very dangerous ? like taipan and mamba .... those can kill you straight right ? or do you devenom em', or other technique i dunno... Im curious and im a total newbie. :)

It’s true the Mamba and the Taipan can kill you “straight.” But so can cobras, rattlesnakes, and many others. One member of this forum has a cotton mouth that has killed someone. There are no snakes with a 100% mortality rate. The effects of an envenomation will hinge on the amount of venom, your body’s reaction, and the medical care given. And directly to your question, yes, many of us keep and work with snakes that are very dangerous. As for devenom. The process is a surgery that removes the venom glands. Those snakes are called Vemonoids. There are a few members on her that have voids, like Scott and Greg, (ha ha) but most of us do not. That is very touchy subject with many venomous keepers.

I was under impression that the Puff takes more lives each year than Echis.

THe most dangerous snake is the one that bites you ;)

A "devenomed" snake is called a venomoid. If run a search on the forum for venomoid you will find some interesting debates.

Chuck I got your Venomoid oh better not go there lol.The most dangerous snake is the one " in the wild you dont see" and the most dangerous snake i would go with a black mamba as for desposition.and deadliest to humans is as chuck said the saw scale for the same reasons he noted. However with AV they would be less likely to kill as many people with that in mind i would say the Russels viper of pakistan would then take overas most deadly to humans.

I am finding info that says both the Echis and Puffs are top runner for most deaths. I would love to find some interesting stats, but I fear that in the bush, we can only guess. I don't think that a tribesman runs tot he nearest town to report every snakebite death. It would be itneresting to see how many documented accounts are from each species.

The puff adder causes the most human fatalities in Africa last I checked........ Chuck, that venomoid will be up for adoption as soon as it is healthy again........ Adoption, not sale........ It is going to a fellow hot keeper in the area........ It is starting to do very well and will be gone soon...... So there....LOL...... Then I can change my signature back to the way it was....... Well anyway, the most dagerous snake I own is a 4 ft female puff adder......... She is almost as hard to hook as a cobra and is a very snappy snake....... She strikes at shadows and tries to do what ever it takes to kill me......... Hooks are a hot keepers best friends.........

Ray Hunter has many nice pics of him working with Mambas. I am sure he will post some for you when he signs back on again.

Oh no you won’t. Before it read “I will never keep a venomoid.” Now we all know better. It will have to read “I will never keep a venomoid again.”

I think what Greg said is true. The Puff is number 1 in Africa. The saw scale may not be number one on any one continent, but number one over all because it spans over several continents.

They are called Black Mambas not because of the skin color but for the color of the mouth when they are warning you they have had enough.

Let him post away chuck because i actually aint sure where i put it on here lol. or better yet let ray post his favorite one with me and that snake with it wrapped around my neck. And as ray has said it was a venomoid I would never have taken that liberty with a hot. Still hate venomoid surgery not the animal. And i would rescue one in a heart beat and try to find it a home with someone that does education. It aint the snakes fault some A****** destroyed a wonderful animal and it has the right to the best life it has left.

Now when you comming down anyway wife has agreed to make the cheese cake. Just be ready to fight hunter for it!!!

I have a week vacation in October and another week in January. Ray said he will be out of town the entire month of Oct, so I guess it will be Jan. Tell Mrs Scott that I am a certified member of the cheesecake destruction team. =)

I read the other day, seemed like it was a reliable source, and they said that the saw scaled viper causes more deaths than all venomous species combined. Is that true?

I think that is what we are trying to establish ;)

just my two cents on the most deaths debate.....
I was under the impression that Echis was the lead runner and puffs were a close second....ive actually read contradictory literature on this.

that wasnt really a useful addition to this thread, but it late and im tired :(

OK, so can we safely use the statement "Echis and Puffs kill more people worldwide than all other snakes combined"?

As far as I know, the Echis is the leading cause of deaths. But what do I know?

those snakes are really pretty... lucky u

Prime rib can cause ray to become more dangerous then any snake around . I believe the proper tools for handling a Raymondus naja voracious is probably a cattle prod ,whip and chair.
