First let me congratulate you on your new addition, I personally think Niloticus are grate monitors especially for beginners! They are very tough and will teach anyone to respect them, every Nil’s IV raised a few years turned to be easy to work with, maybe they are big and have a strong bite, but they give plenty of warning before hand. Its sad there sold as cheep imports $20 per head about 15.000-20.000 heads for the pet trade as opposed to $8 per skin 750.000- 1500.000 skins per year to the skin trade! give or take! You be the judge, at least some guys like you will love then enough to breed them.
I raised Nil on a varied diet and I raised them on a rodent diet, Id say the latter gave a better growth rate and attained larger overall size. Depending on environment?
I use regular light bulbs and 75w floods nothing more. As for your cage 8-4-4feet seems very good to me, its not as much the size as it is the design that really matters, give your monitor all the space in the world, if its not made to sustain his life he will die. I think by now you’ve seen what pour caging can do.
Sure a large water pool is grate! Just think about a draining system, all the filtration will not be as useful as a well placed drain, make one like I described for water monitor and a small inner filter will do the job.
Have fun with your Nil, that’s what we keep them for.
