Someone asked me this because he was told ackies who’d be easier to breed then Jobiensis, nonsense! The only reason they may in fact be easier to breed is there smaller size, provided you give jobies similar size body to cage ratio, and you start with cb babies, you will have equal chance with both species.

But if you get WC then you can expect a long wait before they settle in and do what varanids do! Honestly if your patient it doesn’t matter what size, age, fresh or long term imports, makes no difference sooner or latter with good husbandry Varanids breed.

I laugh when aim told take the easy way start with CB! Yes I laugh not because it’s not good, in fact it much better then WC, but not mandatory.
To me the easy way simply means to learn as much as you can before obtaining any varanids, the when you know enough to say aim going to breed varanids, then it doesn’t make a difference in the world what you obtain, because you know there husbandry.
Simple if you like small lizard like varanids that take little room, then go for it, me I don’t like small varanids except arboreal, my ideal varanids size wise is Jobiensis, it’s a mini raptor that has all the right moves a varanids shod have and knock out colors.
I who’d never ever consider exchanging my nicest jobies for any Australian varanids, not even for Varius. But that’s me! Others will prefer the cut little guys and that’s really what’s important get what you like, not what your told you can breed easier.
Step back and think about the origin of all CB varanids, Ackies, Gluerty, lace, jobies, Doreanus, rudies, komodo and most of all cb varanids, they all come from old WC imports, many tot to be in post reproductive condition, so I say it clear! If you have an old varanids! And think of selling it to start the (easy way) well think again as you may have a chance to produce new blood with your old stock.

I hade to say this, looks like a lot of peoples are thinking this way.

Good points Steeve! To me you have to go with what you love. That is why I am waiting for the exact species that I want. I could have easily got side tracked after seeing other varanids at reptile shows but I just had to say no I would rather have Jobiensis. To me they are my ultimate monitor. But hey if ackies are something you love and really want them then that is what you should get....but never settle or you will eventually second guess your decision. TB

I was never happier when Fish & Wildlife told me I was getting 20 2.5 foot total length V. albigularis, only to turn out I was getting 2.5 SVL V. albigularis! They were absolutely gorgeous and HUGE! Imagine 20 5-7 foot V. albigularis soaking all that East African dirt off their skins, 257 ticks on them, and very dehydrated.....they were just beautiful....wait for what you want, and get that species....with proper care, no over-medication, and varied diet, you have a wonderful animal(s)....

cheers,
markb

It's funny, about ackies being so hard to breed.. I woke up to find 4 eggs from my female.. its her first clutch i really hope it all works out... Man its hard work digging up eggs in a deep enclosure.. I do see the hard work that goes into these guys.

@V.hb - If she buried the eggs how'd you notice them to dig them out?

Congrats on the eggs, best of luck in the incubator :)

Cheers, Kyle~

The females emerge totally emaciated and they look like a deflated balloon. Its unmistakable.

Plus its easy to tell when they are cycling and then they disappear for a few days. If you watch your animals for more than 10 minutes a day, you can predict egg-laying fairly regularly.

Exactly what jeff said.. The night before she was digging away, woke up to see her completely "deflated" covering up the nest.. It's really cool to watch them covering the nest so gently with their noses.. Amazing animals.. You enjoy them even more when you see stuff like this! Thanks!
