Niles are among the WORST monitiors you can have I would only get one if it was from a rescue
Nile gets my vote. I have one some I'm not impartial. They are a handfull though. It's a good monitor if you don't mind having one that you don't interact with much. Mine is taking to handling pretty well these days.

I have both, but I think I prefer savannahs...has nothing to do with the size or anything. Savannahs just seem to have more personality (not the right word, but I know what I mean, lol). Having said that I really like my nile as well. With a nile you just have to be prepared for the large size and the LARGE attitude (you will most likely NOT be sitting on the couch watching TV with a pet nile).
If you have never kept monitors before, stay away from niles. If you have only kept a savannah before, think twice before getting a nile. They are just a big handful (but great if you like that sort of thing!)
Well......none of my favourites are even up there so I voted for a sav. I think Niles will always be a bit too large for my tastes, though they are beautiful.
Niles are going to end up the way iguanas have.... worth nothing, no longer appreciated by most people (not saying there arent good owners) but nile temperment is just to much for the average herper.. savs are worlds better.

I think the main problem with nile monitors is there incredibly cheap price! Just like the green iguanas, anyone can afford them, they are tiny has hatchlings, and pet stores have NO INTEREST in telling you the truth when you are considering buying one. For someone that does not know better, it is hard to imagine that that cheap, tiny little "lizard", be it the green iguana or the nile monitor, is going to grow up to be huge and have an attitude to match!
I agree that niles are not for everyone. Then agian, neither are retics. You have to have a certian level of dedication to keep such animals.
I tell just about everyone to stay away from niles unless you know what you are getting into. I can't stop anyone from keeping them (and would be a hipocrite if I tried, since I have one myself). Hopefully they will not have the same fate as the iguanas, and if they do, I hope it is not as wide spread and in such huge numbers!!

Apart from the fact that both these species are over exploited, or shod I say carelessly!
I vote for Niloticus, because they are one of the top varanids out there! Very unique in many ways, there nastiness only reflects there will to survive, there patterning and colors are awesome, and there morphologies are more complex then any other varanids! Example; teeth and skull dramatically changes from juveniles to adult more so then any other species, they use there tails in more ways then all other varanids, hunting, even fishing! while defence, climbing and swimming is what most varanids use them for, They are mistakenly considered most aggressive because they have a longer juvenile adolescent phase 3-5 years, after this time most will calm down and becomes much easier to work with, they are spirited and intelligent creatures and formidable predators unlike Exanthematicus witch most often seems clumsy and a little dumb!
In temperament they are the closest you can get to Varius and Komodoensis not bad considering the price difference!

Ps. what if Niloticus was the hardest varanids to obtain? Every body who’d want one!
I think we are blessed with the opportunity to learn from this unique specie, I just hope peoples realise this and give them more consideration = better care
Steeve interesting on how you said that. If they were costly, they would be alot harder to obtain.
I love niles, they are my second favorite varanid next to albigularus.. However I didnt vote for them as I feel they are definatly not for beginners. Their colors are incredible, and personally i love their attitudes as well.

I agree with V.hb.
I have had my time in with Niles and i Also think that they are not for Beginners. #1 They get way bigger then a SAV #2 they will not be as easy to tame as a SAV There is many more reasons
here is one i had a 5.5'

I would say go with a SAV
just my 2 cents

I understand Niloticus need lots of dedication, and shod be kept by pssionated keepers. but the question wasent witch is more suitable, it was witch whod you optain?
I favored Niloticus over Exanthematicus, not easy to favor any of my childrens!

Every negative comment made about Niloticus IV seen, where don by peoples who kept them less then 2 years, not enough time to fully appreciate this specie! All you get from most Nil’s in this short time period is the worst of them, no wonder they have such a bad reputation, years ago I remember thinking very little of these monitors, until a fellow Greg Naclario proved me wrong by simply telling me to hold on to my nasty beast a few more years, it became my tamest monitor.
Before this, 3 Niloticus suffered my misunderstanding; I wish I knew Greg then.
Most peoples by them on impulse, then read bad information on this specie, this ultimately leading to apprehension and one more dead varanids, as I always say its easy to care for something you love, I want peoples to love their Niloticus not nourish deception and hatred.

Your right Steeve.......I remember all the small Niles i had in the past and they were little *MONSTERS*...LOL
But the on in the pic i just posted was one of the best temperment Niles i have ever owned or seen. I use to let he run free in my herp room all day with me there. She has never tried to bite when i had her she now belongs to a friend of mine on here (Monitor boy) But i would still say if anyone was to get a first Monitor I would say a SAV would be better then a Nile for a first Monitor.
Her is my old girl running free in the herp room I do miss her

Which Monitor would you rather have?
Neither. If they don't come captive bred (which they don't), they don't come into my collection.

I agree with Jeff.
Regarding the comment made that if they were worth more money, everyone would want one...........I also feel that is absolutely correct but on the same note, they aren't worth more money which is why I think they were brought up in this poll for with sav's.
Honestly, I feel that if the initial price tag of a monitor is a considering factor as to whether or not a person should buy one or not, that a monitor is not for this person. But again, that's just my opinion.
I seem to get accused of being greedy or something when I try to push Ackies as the best first time monitor simply because I have and continually produce them. That seems pretty closed minded to me.
I've kept more species than most, and have learned so much more from my Ackies than anything. Now, I can apply that knowledge and new understanding of behavior to other species I work with and will work with in the future.
I feel Ackies are the BEST first monitor, and still one of my favorite monitors (always will remain high on my list). Also, it doesn't make me feel sick thinking about the large numbers raped from the wild to support the demand in the pet trade only to have 90% of them die within a years time, as is the case with the readily available African species. Not only are Captive bred monitors much more hardy, but often much more calm and easier to work with and understand real behavior.
I guess I'll leave it at that for now. I guess I just felt like voicing my opinions this morning ;)
Steeve, I didnt mean to post any negativity towards niles.. As i said, i love em as a species.. they are alot of fun to work with. I had 2 of them in my collection for a few years, but unfortunatly had to give them to a friend when we moved. I wouldnt own more until I had more space. But even then I think i would rather goto the Toronto Zoo and view theirs in its large enclosure.

My comment about niles being too cheap has nothing to do with their "worth". What I am refering to is the fact that tons of people get them BECAUSE they are so cheap. Not because the paticulary like the Nile better than the Ackie (for example). I agree, if price is your primary concern when purchasing a monitor, you need to look at another type of hobby. However, the super cheap price of niles, savs, and others is what encourages people to purchase these animals on a whim ("hey, if it don't work out or it dies, it is ONLY $20" seems to be the attitude of most impulse buyers). That is what I meant. IF these animals cost a little more, it would make people stop and think about "do I REALLY want one of these" instead of "WOW, look at that low price!"
I am sure you can get my point. This is the exact same problem that happens with Green Iguanas (for the most part)...I don't want to beat a dead horse, but that is the way I look at it.
By the way, I have always liked niles and savs both, and since that is what this thread was about, that is what I was trying to stick to.
Me, I'd prefer to have a Nile, but all monitors are fascinating

nile's are way better looking but they are really hard to handly and pack quit a bite.a sav is more like a puppy dog compared to a nile. good luck with your dessicion.
