The prairie rattlers have started their annual migration back to the densites a few miles from our home. We will be doing as much night cruising as possible over the next couple weeks. By mid-September the densites should be active again, as we have had the fall count at this time previously. Anyone wanting to come out for the weekend to enjoy a BBQ and the company of other enthusiasts is welcome. Email scaleszoo@sasktel.net for more details

Not a chance! The prairie rattler, the bullsnakes and hognose are protected species in Saskatchewan. The cattle, however, are not. We usually have a feast of burgers, sausage and wild boar.

The distance is what makes this event so special. We are in the middle of nowhere, and the desert is spectacular. The limestone cliffs along the river canyon provide excellent densites for the rattlers and the bulls.

This area is not well known, or well travelled, and we like it that way. Not every day you see road signs that state NO FUEL next 126 km. The wildlife is abundant, the air and water are clean, and the lifestyle is laid back, you can leave the truck running with the keys in it and doors unlocked while going for groceries or beer. Nobody locks their doors, and everybody looks out for each other, kids run about without a care in the world.

I have lived in every province from BC to Ontario, and something about this area draws like a magnet.

If I were independently wealthy, I would offer an airline ticket to the first American or Eastern Canadian as a dare to travel this far!

Actually, Ryan and I joined the tourism committee 2 years ago in our bid to qualify for a zoo license. Keeping snakes was not really understood by most of the residents here, and people wondered why anybody would want to keep snakes. It was one way to reach the public in a positive way, even though the reptile zoo does not draw visitors as we had hoped. Not that we care, it affords us the opportunity to travel that most people can only wish for.
