View Full Version : Never feed venomous together

We picked up 7 dusky pigmies last Monday. All 7 had been housed and feed in the same enclosure. After we got them back to our shop and began to box them for quarantining, I noticed one had a wound on the side. Nothing unusual about that as they were all collected. Checked the wound on Wednesday and necrosis had set in. Seems this little pig had been bitten by one of his cage mates. There is really no way to reverse necrosis, so the outlook it bleak for this little guy. We are trying to arrest the infection and keep him as strong as possible to give him a fighting chance. We are treating the wound with Nolvasan (2.35% solution) and giving him a daily 5 minute soak in Electrolyte. Notice the massive cell destruction inside of the circle. We prefer to always house our venomous separately unless breeding, but we occasional have to double up due to space constraints, but we NEVER feed together. I would advise all hot keepers to separate if possible and definitely do not feed multiple venomous snakes in the same enclosure.

Not good bro. Anyone who has had 2 Coppers trying to eat the same mouse quickly learns the value if feed totes :)

Yeah, that is one that I laid back for you. Ha ha. I got 7, 4 are looking well. One died the next day. This one in the pic is not promising and there is a small one that is not promising. Of course I will keep the sick ones and (hopefully) nurse them back to health. You guys can pick from the healthy ones.
I'm waiting to see what makes it then I'll pick. Not fair to you to pick now.

Hey bro...Don't worry about me. I want to get a mail and female and try to get some breeding going. If that works out so much the better for all of us...

I didn’t make it over to the shop yesterday. Barry and Joe soaked sick pig in the Electrolyte and tended to his wound. Our vet gave us some prescription medicine that claims to burn away necrotic tissue, so we are now treating him with that. Outlook still bleak. Joe says he was very weak.

ask the hospital if they keep flesh eating maggots on hand, they may let you have enough for a couple of treatments
Sorry to see that...but shyite happens even to a pro

If anyone else runs across this problem, I highly recommend Granules – V (http://www.pbsanimalhealth.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/wound/granulexv.html?E+scstore) . This is a prescription medicine our vet gave us to treat a snake’s nose that had rubbed it raw on screen wire. Joe noticed the bottle read that this medicine treated necrotic tissue. We have treated the wounds on the pigmy and seen great improvement. I am still afraid that we were too late on this little guy, but I am impressed with the effects this medicine has had on his bite wound. I would recommend anyone dealing in large quantities of venomous snake have this medicine on hand.
I agree. Almost miracle-like results over a two day period.
