View Full Version : wondering what's wrong....plzview..
k, this is like the most popular turtle pet I know of, so one of you has got to know what I am talking about...
first off, the species I'm talking about it the painted slider turtle.
My little guy has been with me a year. Recently I've noticed a growth spurt. His body is proportunate, but, there is a noticable bump on one side of his face. Kinda like one side is growing faster than the other. It's not fat cause it can fit all its apendiges plus it's head into the shell.
this is all kinda confusing to me. I don't know wether it is an ailment, or nothing at all.
I'll post a picture tommorow when I have some more time, but for now comments are appreciated.
thnx

From the sounds of it your turtle has an "ear abscesse" Abscesses are treated surgically; the abscess is opened and flushed with a medicated solution.(Betadine) A culture of the abscess may be needed to determine the type of infection that caused the abscess. Topical medication and injectable antibiotics may also be used.
Personally you should take your animal to the vet and have it properly examined and whatknot procedures. I added a pic to help what I am talking about so if it doesnt match up, I'm sorry.

k, I think you may b right. however. For the moment I am going to treat the problem with clean water, and a change of diet.
What is wrong with his diet? Why wasn't he being kept in clean water and on a proper diet in the first place? There is no such thing as a Painted Slider. The turtle I believe you are speaking of is probably a red-eared slider. There are red eared slider and painted turtles. Sliders are common in the pet trade, painteds are illegal to keep in Canada. Not sure about the US

AND THIS ONE IS BLURRY, BUT BEST SHOWS HIS BUMP ON THE RIGHT SIDE (it is hard to get a pic of him with his neck/head out.)

by clean water, I mean instead of treated tap water use spring water.
as for diet I was using the green stix for food plus the odd fish or cricket. I bought a hundred guppies about 2 months ago. They all went in 2 tanks, the larger part, about 50 went in with the turtle.
In my tall tank I lost 2 large red tip sharks from the fungis of infected guppies. As for the turtle he ate and killed prolly 25 or 30. Now he's got this lump.........dunno..
Bump seems to be getting better/smaller..
yahyo
Good to be hearing that it's doing better. If it doesn't go away in a week or two, I'd suggest going to a vet to get it looked into.
Linds- All species of painted minus the western and southern subspecies are illegal in Ontario
K,
IF THESE TURTLES ARE SO ILLEGAL TO SELL IN CANADA/ONTARIO, THEN Y ARE THEY FOR SALE AT ,
http://www.petsandmore.ca
for $39.95, I GOT MINE FOR 20 LAST SUMMER, FROM THERE.
SO, ANYONE KNOW WHAT SPECIES MINE IS FROM THE ABOVE PICS?
THNX, AND HE CONTUNUES TO GET BETTER.
from the pics looks like a red eared slider - its not a painted anything. It illegal to keep native wildlife as pets in most provinces. Red eared sliders aren't native to any part in Canada and therefor should be legal to keep throughout. People should stick to latin names, makes things less confusing

It's obviously a red eared slider. When I was talking about painteds, I was answering Linds' question about legality of painteds, which was a bit off topic.

Eastern painted turtles are native to southern ontario, they are common here.
They are protected as far as I know but that is a result of anal retentive wildlife laws not their scarcity. I had on that I treated for a cracked shell for awhile.
