I have a savannah monitor as some of you may know and he/she is about 8 inches long and i put dirt in his 55 gallon aquarium i was told and have read that they will dig burrows to go in?
i have yet to see any burrows and he has been in for 5 days now.
do they always dig burrows?

Hi Lori,

When young they also use the use the burrows of other animals like the mole cricket and other animals - provide him with hide spots too for his own security and sanity...also pick up Daniel Bennetts & Ravi Thakoordyal book, Savanna Monitors - its a damn good investment for $16.
cheers,

Mikey has calci-sand in his tank, so he can't dig burrows, but he does dig up the sand out of the corners. He loves his trees because they have little crevices he can climb into. Savannahs love cramped hiding spots.

Hey Lori, try heaping the soil up around the entrance to his hide box to where he has to dig to enter it...this may get his burrowing instincts started.
