:( My 2 week old baby leo broke his/her arm last night. I took him to the vet today and he put on a splint with medical tape. He/she has to keep it on for 10 days. I don't know exactly hom this happened. It could have been from the cage mates or him/herself. I will try to post a picture of it. It's so cute but sad at the same time.

A 2 week old gecko? That must be one small splint! If you can, I'd love to see a pic of him. If it's any consolation, my first rescued chameleon had a broken leg, and he had to wear his splint/cast for 8 weeks!!!! He HATED it.

Cheers!

I think you should put them n there own inclosures, so you dont have any stress from each other.

The little one with the broken arm is going to be ok i hand feed him so i know what he eats. And it is a little hard for him to walk around he don't move too much. And he is separated from the rest.

And gecko guy that little one you are refering to that is a picture of him at 2 days old he was born that little i belive he/she is a runt. and that little cage they were in is not there home i put them in there so i could take a pic of the runt compared to 3 others that were born the same day.

i currently have 7 adults 6 juvies and 7 babies and more on the way.

Snow snake as far as i can tell none of the babies are stressed out i house 7 of them in a 20 gallon enclosure with 8 little hides. i watch them all eat. And they all are doing well even the runt. Except for the baby with the broken arm he is separated from the rest. I posted this because i was sad that he broke his arm and it's not an everyday thing to see a 2 week old with a broken arm. I took all the right measures possible. That night i called the vet they couldn't fit me in that night so i had to wait for the morning. I disscussed everything i could with the vet. And took the appropriate steps to ensure a complete recovery.
If you have any other questions or suggestions please feel free to ask.

thats not right though they shouldnt be born that small the olny way it would come out that small is by being scared away from its yoak sac witch is probably due to u takeing it out of the incubator to early before it could finish obsorbing the yoak sac they schould be left in the incubator for a day after they hatch

The poor dear! I hope it gets better soon. However, 7 leos in a 20 gallon is way to many. Even if they are small. They need to be separated to prevent injuries like this and to make sure they all eat well.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes. I'm sure he will fully recover. After all this i belive he will not be sold and stay with me, along with the runt.

Gecko guy that is untrue. There are abnormal babies. I believe he hatched in the middle of the night. Because i noticed him in the morning i waited until that night to remove him. Just as you had posted i wanted to ensure he soaked the yolk, cause i noticed how small he is.

i have had to put down 2 babies Already in my 3 years. 2 years ago 2 babies from the same clutch were born with NO eyes. Yes no eyes strange but true. I even took them to a reptile breeder and he agreed with me. I tried my hardest to help them but they would not eat at all through any attempts that were made. I even resorted to force feeding but they would regurgate it. so after 3 weeks of watching them dwindle down to close to nothing i froze them. I could not bare to watch them suffer any longer. Freezing i believe is the most humane way to put a reptile to sleep. I have also talked with other leo breeders in my area and they say their are possibilities of runts and i guess the word i'm looking for is either under devoloped, handicapped or degenarative.

I have also had 1 baby not be able to get out of the egg and by time i cut it open it was to late. After getting the baby out i opened his/her mouth and i did not see an egg tooth. I try not to disturb the eggs. but i had noticed this one trying to get out for 2 days and he hadn't even made one slice in the egg. then for 3 hours no movement. So i told myself i have no choice i need to try to get him out. i was to late. This happened my first year breeding.

Just wanted to update every one. I took off his little "cast". and his arm is a smaller than the other one but i think its just because he hasn't been able to use it. And the vet accidently cut off half of one finger and 1 complete finger.(i feel so bad for him). But he is up and walking and his arm seems to have healed pretty well.

That's fantastic! (even though he's missing some toes) Nice to know that you did everything you could to help the little guy.

Hey Drew !

Congrats on the care you brought that little leo.

And don't defend yourself too much on negative posts written about your thread.

What you did is wonderfull and more than most of us would of done with an injured baby.

You simply posted some pictures and people started to try to find mistakes in your pics. (we call that jealousy) I think some people need to proove to themselves that they are better keepers-breeders than others..

Encloser too small, small un-healthy babies, etc...

It's not a perfect world, not everything is like pictures in the books. And we do the best we can with what we know and what we have.

Anyways,, great job... keep it up !

Thank you for that wyz. And your absolutly right i shouldn't defend myself like i did but i am still kinda new at this site and from pics and post people do get the wrong message or they do try to read to much into things. I may not be the best keeper or breeder but i do try my hardest. People also have to relize not every single breeder is the exact same way. I may like something or do something different that you don't like or agree with but it works for me and my reptiles and vice versa. And the more information we share with each other the better care we can give our animals. Thats what forums like this are there for.

As an example( i use bed n beast for my adult leos I have heard alot of complaints about that subtrate, like impactation, it's dusty, and possibilities of bactieria being able to stay in it. but i absoultly love it i have never had any problems with that subtrate, and i put 5 inches at least in the enclosure and i don't have to use a nesting box ( and nobody bash the way i have my setup i have been doing this 3 years with no problems with the setup at all) i have even talked to the herptologist at the zoo about my setup.) and YEA I might be going there this weekend and get taken behind the scenes to be taught how to build different kinds of cages and learn naturalistic setups. I'm so exited about that.

I also alway take my reptiles to the vet at any hint of a problem. i belive that is the best thing to do I couldn't tell you how many times i've been to the vet and had stool samples done and there would be nothing wrong. Heck one of my leos (loki) goes to the vet for regular checkups cause she was born a runt.

I guess what i'm trying to say is i'm not a beginner i do know what i'm doing i just sometimes have questions about problems i have not came across yet and thats what i belive this forum should be here for. It shouldn't be here to bash people, but to help then create better homes and heath care for their reptiles. and i know how annoying it gets when people ask the same things over and over but we are here to help educate people on the proper care of reptiles. I really like what i see here at this site and hope to stay here and possibly share my knowledge with others, and learn valuble information.

Well said! Couldn't agree with you more (except on the substrate but do what works for you ;) ) We are here to help. It's great that you have a vet that at least knows enough about reptiles to not put it down at the sight of a broken limb (a lot of vets would). I don't take my herps to the vet for every little thing because I'm not so confident about the herp vets in my area, so for me what works is to guage it myself until I think something is really wrong.

Anyway, glad to see he is doing lots better! You're right, the skinny leg is just atrophy. How is he doing walking and such?

He's getting alot better. He/she is still a little iffy on walking fully on it he/she is trying though. But that will be corrected with time. And now that the "cast" is off he/she is eating alot better. I think being that little and having the "cast" was a little stressful. I still need to call the vet for a checkup, he wanted to see how he was doing after the "cast" came off.

That's great. I came in late on this post but I'm glad the little one is doing so much better. Don't feel bad, it could happen to anyone. Good luck with them. :)
