Hey, I was just curious as to what you feed your savannahs?? I have my two little guys on insects only. Also a pic of you savannah would be cool and if you tell me what you feed them, could you state the age also. Thanks:)

P.S.- if you could post the pic in this thread, not a "check in my gallery". I think people would enjoy viewing it in the thread, I know I do.

i feed my sav with fuzzies (my sav mesure 20inch) and with a lot of meat (calf's/chicken liver, beaf...), more you vary his food, more is better, but my sav is to big to eat insect. i will send picture on my gallery today. bye

but my sav is to big to eat insect.

Savannahs eat insects all of their lives. Its actually really good exersize for an adult Savannah to go around chacing down huge crickets. Super worms are great for adults all their lives too. Of Course I don't mean feed them only insects. the do need meat, and eggs, and fish , and anything else your, your kids, your dog wont eat.lol Ok Not quite that much of a variety. Just really no prepared foods. Too high in fat. Savannahs get notoriously fat anyway.

Insects should make up about 80% of their diet for a majority of their life. Unfortunatly its hard to get "large" insects unless you have access to roaches, and I dont. So i usually feed crickets until they reach 3 feet (occasionally here and there otherwise too get them some excercise) Mealworms (all their life) rodents (once large enough to handle them) Once in awhile I feed them Seafood, meat and boiled/scrambled eggs. If you boil them, leave the shell on. They can also eat the odd lizard (i dont do this, but it can be done)

I simply stick to a full rodent diet with the occasionall hissers and eggs on the side..

over a foot .. only rodents for me..

Under proper husbandry .. savs should not get fat..

I've been feeding rodents since my sav was about 12'' long.Insects and pinkies before that. he also developed a taste for chicken hearts and gizzards for a short while.

right now he's a little on the plumper side because i'm giving him stuff that the other monitors wont eat (new monitors, acclimating still).. he's currently about 2.5 feet long.. had him since he was 5'' long.

time to feed the beast..

At the petstore, they have a small one and they feed it pinkies and crickets. SOMETIMES they will get mealies.

My guy is about 2 feet, mainly he gets live full grown mice, but he will also eat chicken, beef, fish, raw eggs, superworms, silkworm, and basically anything else that he can get a hold of.

As for the can-o-snails, my sav won't touch them but my blue tongue loves them.

Hudson: .. I can't beleive u feed live preay to a monitor.. By far one of the most grewsome sight .. There is absolutly no need for it..

Monitors are prededetors as well as scavengers in the wild... they are renown for being "garbage cans in captivity .. live feeding, has no purpose

I can't find that dam can-o-snails here. I would love to try it for my box turtles. I find it odd that a Sav wouldn't eat them, being that they are supposed to be big snail eaters. Dam it, all this monitor talk and I don't own one right now.

Dom I agree with the live feeding. I watched one in a petstore get bit by a live mouse right on the nose. Not a good idea! Yes it is a very grewsome sight. A little disturbing also.

Dom, I'm not one of those people who get a kick out of feeding live prey, I do it for a reason. My Sav was was wild caught at two feet long he's used to catching his own food and eating live prey. I've tried frozen thawed, but unless he sees it run across his enclosure on it's own he won't touch it.
