Hello! We took the jack for a walk today at Rogers Resevior (sp) in Newmarket, ON.

We saw one snake but I need hepl figuring out what it was....no photo either :(

It was about 8 inches long, pencil thin of course. Light grey body, with two slightly darker grey stripes going long ways from the neck all the way to the tail.

At the neck the head became a reddish/rusty/orange/brown color. The head was defintly a differen shade/color than the body was. I wasn't able to catch him but he climbed right over my foot before I realized him.

Any ideas?

possably a red bellied snake or a weard colour phase of a brown snake. http://fwie.fw.vt.edu/VHS/Northern_red-bellied_snake_Storeria_occipitomaculata_occipitoma culatalr.jpg

Wow you are not only fast, but correct.

He was lighter than that guy and somewhat "cleaner" but I am guessing its because he was a hatchling/juvi...that is indeed the correct snake though!!!!

Thank you! I am excited I have seen something other than common garters finally!

Thanks! He was quite fast but seemed fairly "stupid" since he was actually near the parking lot and crawling over a giants foot. lol (my foot)

Nice!

Hi Marisa,

Red-bellies are pretty common in much of southern Ontario, but very secretive. 8" would be adult length, especially for a male. They are the smallest species in Canada!
