Depends. If they do that while about to eat and I am bugging them, I back off. If they do they when we want to pick them up, we just grab them before they bite....they never end up biting anyways.

I always back off for a while and let my snake be if it's got some attitude. When it happens to me, my snakes usually have a good reason to be grumpy, i.e. in shed phase.

Unless I absolutely have to remove the snake for some immediate purpose I never disturb a grumpy snake.

With that said, I do make exceptions for my really young snakes. Like my few month old corn and pueblan milk. They are nervous and skittish and will hiss, musk, etc. But they're just not used to being handled much. So with them, I'll just pick em up anyways and they calm down in a few seconds, well at least the corn does!!!

All depends on the snake, size, and situation. As long as it isn't a potentially dangerous situation (by dangerous I don't mean a bite from a 5' boa, but more from a 12' burm) I just go in bare-handed and grab 'em before they get the chance to give it anymore thought. Though some snakes that are extremely aggressive I will use the aid of a hook. If you hesitate at all that's when you will get bit. For large snakes, I use a hook most of the time whether or not they are showing any agression, just as a precautionary measure.

i usually back off, wait for them to calm down, if theyre still moody then id get a pillow case and cover them and pick them up :p there, simple!

Depends what size and the "known" temperment. I kind-of know which snakes not to bother when they are grumpy(ask me how I learned that..lol.)...The 13 ft Burms I wouldn't bother when they are in a striking mood, even the ones that I know are docile, because you will have a fight and some stitches if you make the wrong reading....but most others I slide my hand into the enclosure if I have to ..most of the time nothing happens..most of the time...lol

Lizzy,
If it makes you feel comfortable, then a hook can be used for any size animal. I personally don't have a problem taking a hit from an adult corn so I wouldn't take the time to use one, I would jsut grab em before they had the chance to bite - if it did nail me though it's no biggie  It's all up to you and what you feel comfortable with. An adult corn isn't a serious safety hazard so using a hook isn't absolutely imperative, but it is less stressful for the snake and yourself if you are nervous to use one ;)

It all depends on whats going on...I tend to handle most of my breeders alot I like to keep em as tame as possible, but if just like everything they have there bad days and normaly I can tell when one is having one of those days and will try to leave em alone as much as I can!

I just reach in and grab them except with the viperboas and blood python, there we use gloves or hooks or both. they don't react the same way to the gloves and hook as they do to a bare hand.
