It seems as though some people have a hard time picturing just how small a baby Spiny-tail Monitor is, so I thought I'd give a visual.

These two pictured were 2 days old at the time of the pic (last week). Too cute :)

Try reading over the Captive FAQ found on Varanus.net. It is very informative and should point you in the right direction.

As for natural history, Daniel Bennet's Little Book of Monitor Lizards is great for such information.

If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to offer my thoughts/experiences.
