I'm new to snakes, and just got a male hognose :) I don't know what to name him! My spouse believes that he is terrible at naming things, so the responsibility has fallen onto me! I have only two ideas, neither of which are terribly original: Kermit, or Noodle.
I like "Kermit" (as it's a bit ironic, and I've always loved Kermit the frog), and "Noodle" just sounds adorable. I'm open to suggestions lol!
Anyone have a particular way they name their pets? I'm still struggling to name our female green basilisk as well :S

Well our Russian Rat Snakes are named after gods related to hunting: Orion, Artemis, Callisto.
Our Japanese Rat Snakes are named related to Japan (at this moment all three are Sushi, as we can't recognize them yet).
All our Ball Pythons are just Klusek I, Klusek II, etc. (in my language kluska is a food similiar to dumpling).
Only our corns are just random things, Julian, Redhead and White One.

Male hoggies are after Egyptian gods, Horus, Ra, and Osiris. Frmale hoggies were random. Emma and Evillene. Everything else is rather random actually lol. I may stick to Greek gods if I get more carpet pytbons since I named my female Persephone and when I get a male for her he will be Hades..then the BPs are Moko because he looked like mochachino (a coffee drink) when I got him, but I'm not fond of food names. And Amara just came to me and sounded sweet and beautiful like my female BP is.
Geckos are all mostly random. Duckie, Stubbs, Legend, Relic, Tango, Mango (came named), Maliwan(came named), and Jupiter (came named)
My leopard geckos again are different. Vendie is my oldest gecko period and was named because when I got him as a baby he had a perfect white V on his neck. His fill mame4is Vendetta, but I NEVER call him that lol. Freska because she looks like the soda (the only animal I have willingly named after food lol).. then the others all follow a snow theme as they are all from snow morphs. Snow dude, S'Noel, Ava (short for avalanche), annnnd...I have one juvie who is still unnamed....she's a super snow.
I rarely instantly name something though. Most of my reptiles went weeks or months without names lol

I usually let some detail about the snake name them. My first snake was Maize the corn snake. Then there is Del the funky lampropeltis because he is a hybrid and has headphone like markings on his head. My first California red sided garter was Xiuhcoatl, r.i.p. little buddy, which is Aztec God whose name translates to turquoise snake. Shortly after he passed I got another lnfernalis with a kinked tail so he is named Obi the obtuse. His garter buddy is all black and named Darth. We have a blue eyed luecistic rat snake that reminds me of the moon, so she is called Luna. Our newest addition is a female kingpin ball python, and I wanted a name to match the crime based side of her morph. So she is Bonnie and the male I get will be Clyde. I hope this gives you some ideas on how to name the bugger.

I usually don't name mine by what they look like or personality types nor do I have a "theme." I spent/spend hours looking at those baby name sites and picking out names that I like (I have a long list) and when the time comes, just pick and choose. I like the slightly less "traditional/common names." In the beginning I named a few based on breeding pairs I wanted to do later on, but I lost interest in that.
So the names I have so far are:
Boas: Jayden, Juniper, Prestin, Dalton, Celeste, Tito, Layna, Kenisha, Kayode, Tavarus and Tatiana.
Hognoses: Rory and Zara
Carpets: Nyssa, Nyota, and Bayard
Kingsnakes: Gabriella, Dominic, and Sparky (he was the only one named after his attitude).
Cornsnakes: Zippora and Xzavier
Ratsnakes: Winter (named after my favorite season and he was my first snake--yellow rat snake).

Sometimes I choose a theme for mutiple snakes, such as a group of orange/red corn snakes all having names that relate to fire (Bridget after the Celtic goddess of the hearth and forge, Dante after Dante Alighieri who wrote The Inferno, Dragon for obvious reasons, and future Cayenne Fire corn probably Ember).
Sometimes I might go by the geographical region where the snake is naturally found or where it happened to come from and choose a name based on that.
Sometimes I go by personality or notable physical attributes.
And sometimes the animal just names itself. I look at the snake or a photo of the snake and a name pops into my mind. Sometimes I don't even care for the name, but it just sticks in my head and pushes out all other attempts at naming. That happened with Diego the western hognose whom I've only ever seen online, as he's being held for shipping until South Dakota thaws out in the spring. It's also geographically appropriate, I suppose. He hails from Texas.
If you can't come up with a name that resonates with you, wait until you meet the snake if he's not already home. That might help you decide.
ETA: I'm not sure about Kermit. Hoggies love to eat frogs and toads. :P
snake 1, snake 2, snake 3....etc

I usually have themes for different types of animals.
My snakes are named after scientists who have made major contributions to their field(one is named after a fictional character, but still fits this theme): Sherkaner, Tesla, Kepler, Pascal, Fermi
My two geckos, Howl and Calcifer, are named after characters from Howl's Moving Castle, but if I have more geckos in the future they will all have names from Miyazaki movies.
My tarantulas have pretty random names, although many are characters from Zelda games: Zelda, Link, Midna, Gohma, Fi, and Majora. The misfits are named based on certain traits: Yoda is small and has a green sheen, Frodo has curly brown hair, Nessus is a relatively bold member of a very skittish species, and Flenser is the collective name of all the H incei living in my communal tank. Anyone who recognizes and understands those last two references can be my BFF. Tarantulas I no longer have mostly had Zelda-themed names, though. I haven't owned any other mygalomorph spiders, but if I ever acquire some they'd probably have Zelda-themed names.
Animals I had in the past were all themed too:
Names for true spiders(mostly jumping spiders) were Italian words that gave at least a vague description of their appearance. Fish were all named after Transformers, except for Gigantor who was just massive(a plecostomus of some sort). Gerbils were named after super heroes, except for non-holdback babies which had whatever cutesy affectionate placeholder name happened to stick; things like Roo, Baby, Squishy, Booger, etc. (I didn't pass these names on to the new owners, however) Hamsters were named after food. Anoles were named after various oldschool kaiju.
The only animals immune to theme-naming are cats and dogs. That's partly because the dogs I have had in the past and the cat I currently have(Princess Jasmine, aka PJ) were not named by myself. But since cats and dogs aren't animals that people would typically have several of at once, themes don't really work well. For me, cats and dogs will always have unique individual names. Same would probably also apply to anything else that I probably would never own more than two of at one time, like ferrets, bunnies, tortoises, tegu lizards, etc.

I just pick a name that comes to mind and I ask myself, does it fit the snake?
My rosy boas are: Daisy (never bites, very docile, doesn't mind handling but doesn't really enjoy it either), Pepper (female spawn of Satan when hungry otherwise super docile), Jack (outgoing curious male), Crystal (named after me but spelled different), Lyli (named after a friend but spelled differently), Maple and Ash (named after a pair of one way streets in my city that I often travel on -- they are a breeding pair), and Cecil and Jerry (relatives -- named after a friend that passed away).
Sand boas: Ema (she's a bit of a princess snake, very picky) and Potter (he has a Harry Potter lightning bold on his forehead).
Ball python: Brian Pumpkinbutt (named after Brian Barczyk and has a perfect jack o' lantern face on his back, but butt sounds cuter)
Retics: Mango (mango colored -- lavender albino tiger female) and Trevor (he just seemed like a Trevor to me)
Green Anacondas: Dianah (wild caught female with a reference to Wonder Woman) and the Little Green Meanie (wild caught male that is very shy and defensive)
Boa constrictor: Hercules (rescued snake, he came with the name)
Taiwanese beauty snake: Meili (means beautiful in Taiwanese according to a Taiwanese friend -- very original)
Honduran milk snake: Michael (used to be called "milky" but that seemed a little too childish)
or, for my retics, butthead 1, butthead 2, butthead 3.....
Ahahaha... So true!

Most of my snakes are named after gods and warriors. Two are named after fictional characters in kids shows that my son likes. Ultimately you can choose a theme or random names that you like or that may describe your animals in some way. It's fun when you find one that sticks. I like where you were going with the Kermit idea :). For a male hoggie you could obviously call him Porkchop but I'd personally name him Maxwell. That's the pig's name in the Geico commercials. I think those are pretty funny :).

It's always easier for us when we have purchased a pair. We have Boris and Natasha, Romeo and Juliet, Thor and Freya, Frodo and Galadriel, and even a pair of jungle pythons Tarzan and Jane. When we purchased two female Darwins to add to our breeding project they became Thelma and Louise.
Corny maybe, but that's how we roll. :)

I first look up names relating to the locale of the species, it seems.
Chaska is named after the Incan Goddess of dawn/dusk, and fertility. As a South American species, it made sense :)
Avatre was more complicated. I was going to name her after an Incan or Mayan or Brazilian name....but I had trouble finding one I liked. Finally, I gave up on that idea and looked at my bookshelf. One of my favorite books, Joust by Mercedes Lackey, has a crimson-and-gold dragon named Avatre. I decided to go with that :)

I usually give my snake names that referance entertainment. Whether they be books, TV, comics, etc. The only ones not following this pattern are Bud my ball python, Draco my checkered garter, and Demigod my eastern garter. I was 12 when I got Bud and I called him my buddy so that's the name he got, and Demigod's original owner named him and I kept it. I gave Draco his name because he reminded me of a tiny angry dragon as a baby, because he was so scared of the mouse pinks, he'd strike out at them and rattle his tail. But I could easily claim I named him after Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter.
Cloud is named after Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy, River is named after the city of Riverrun in Game of Thrones, Sanji is named after Sanji from One Piece, and Nymeria was named after one of the wolves from Game of Thrones. My late BRB Guin was named after Guin from Guin saga.
I'll be getting two new little ones in the spring, so I guess I'll see what I name them! Plus a male snow boa eventually, either next spring/fall or in 2017.

Omg I LOVE that series!!! She's my favorite author like...EVER! I was wondering if that's where her name came from, but never asked, figuring the answer would be no lol.

Hehehe, I'm glad someone knows which one I'm talking about! I'm not as big of fan of the second two books, but the first one really resonated with me. I love how the dragons act like actual animals, and I have a giant soft spot for ancient Egyptian settings and mythos.

My sister named her cat Nahla from the lion king with a spelling change to be different. I adopted her when she moved away. I've just kept the Disney theme going. I try and pick a name that fits the animal while keeping within Disney names.

We are a bit more adventurous with our lizards. Molly and Micky the Mertens' water monitors; the three ackies are named after the 3 Musketeers; the 2 sand monitors are named Eddie and Charlie, after 2 of our favourite players from our AFL team; and the beardies are fairly random. Nemo because she has a couple of toes missing; Brocky because he sits on his rock like the king of the mountain (google Peter Brock if you don't know); Rory because when we got him we were told it was a girl, and it was called Rosie; and Rexie, well because my wife called him sexy Rexie when we brought him home, and it stuck.

I generally add -ie to the end of their names; eg:
Plush moose: Moosie
Hognose: Snakie
Or double up: Moose-Moose, Snake-Snake
Or combo: Snakie-Snake
Also, hognoses tend to get very chunky so instead of Noodle, why not Udon?

I never used to be much of a name giver, this is the first time all my animals (besides my newest one) have a name. It does make it so much easier with my family and friends, they can not remember the species at all. But now they will ask me, How is Xena doing? Has Loki eaten yet?.. Which i kind of like like :), it is also quite different my current collection is a whole lot smaller than my last so i spend a lot more time with each individual. So i suppose it's fun!
So far i have these names:
Renji (Super hypo Nicaragua boa)
Rukia (T+ Nicaragua boa)
Xena (Tiger Retic)
Zuko (Purple Albino retic)
Loki (Labyrinth het albino burmese)
My Genetic stripe retic het albino, is still nameless. I am trying to give him a name i find fitting, but i am having a really hard time choosing!: Hiro or Haku. ( I really like Ozai, but it sound really silly in dutch, and such a evil name isn't really fitting for the gentle little thing either)
I just pick a name I like. Normally I just wait and a name will pop up I like to match the animal.
Right now I am liking the show Game Of Thrones so hence the names of my snakes now lol. Tyrion, Khaleesi, Cersei, and Drogo are all from the tv show :)
I tend to like people names more so than the normal "Fido" names, but that's for my animals. I have no problem with others naming their animal what ever they use :)
My neice's snake is named Noodle and yes I think it's a cute name :p

I'm incredibly simple. I think food names are fricking ADORABLE. I had a bunny I named Bagel once, and that was about the highlight of my naming skills. XD
For now though, for my first snow, I came up with Ghost, which isn't food related. Mostly because of her pink eyes (I'm not sure if she'll keep that or not as she gets older, snow pictures aren't always clear on the eyes when adults) and that she'll be pretty white. It's a pseudo-reference to Game of Thrones' Ghost, but at the same time it's mostly because she'll be white.
It's a nice double name. .)

I also called my red Chinese fighter fish Ruby.. cos he was super red and beautiful.. And finale my hamster.. Thomas, just cos its sound nice on him.. and sophisticated.. haha :D

Currently my 3 year old names any new additions. We have recently added Ben the kitten (female) and a boa called Auntie Rachel (after a teacher at his nursery).
For the snake in particular I would have gone for something else but hey, that's what he wants to call her.
We also have Lola the rabbit (we did have her sister Lottie also who unfortunately got taken by a fox) and two older tomcats - Slug (he looks like a big grey slug) and Gizmo...
For them the names just came. No conventions as such they just felt right for the animals.

If I can't find a name for one of mine, my mom names them! She named Horus, which started the egyptian god names for male hoggies.....she also named one of my geckos Stubbs becayse he's got a frog butt....ummmm....she named Calypso, but I no longer have her and love that name soooo, it will be recycled at some point. She also named furry critters too. =)
Sometimes names just jump out at me, sometimes I put thought into it, and sometimes I'm just stumped lol.

I give them people names because it helps anthropomorphize the snake in peoples minds. A snake named Lucy or Debbie is a lot less scary for most people.

I agree, since i started naming them my friends and family seem more interested and less frightened.
Renji (Super hypo Nicaragua boa)
Rukia (T+ Nicaragua boa)
Xena (Tiger Retic)
Zuko (Purple Albino retic)
Loki (Labyrinth het albino burmese)
Hiro (Genetic stripe retic het albino),
(Lord) Sebastian (Bullsnake) He already had this name, still unsure whether or not he is staying here so keeping that name.
Mad Max
01-09-16, 08:07 PM
I usually spend a couple of weeks or more getting to know them and eventually one just seems to fit. My snake was such a little snapper the first week I handled him that I almost named him Mad Max, but he quickly reversed his behavior and became so easygoing that 'Karl' just seemed to suit him better.
My Genetic stripe retic het albino, is still nameless. I am trying to give him a name i find fitting, but i am having a really hard time choosing!: Hiro or Haku.
Haku is a great name for an albino.

There are times that I regret having zero interest in naming my reptiles, because if I did, I could have tons of fun with it. I'm almost certain that I would use taxon-specific themes: For instance, all of the boas would receive names of famous painters. There would be a Renoir, a Monet, and of course a Rembrandt. The tree pythons would be named after famous composers, like Bach, Vivaldi, or Mozart. It would seem adequate for the rattlesnakes to be named after rock icons, like Jagger, Presley, or Berry. And let's not forget about the mambas, who should probably receive names like Dahmer, Bundy, and Gacy...
But instead of all that, my animals just receive boring ID numbers.
The upside is that I can actually remember those IDs...;)

My crested gecko, Rodney McKay or "Rodney" - my favourite character in Stargate Atlantis
My Rosy Boa, Boaz (ancient Hebrew name that means "in strength"). Why? Because "boa" is in the name!
My Okeetee Corn, Jasper, just because I really liked the sound of the name.

I wanted to go with something Celtic based because I have a lot of Scottish blood in me but the guy I got my boa from told me he had something for me to transport him in and he just found a brown sugar cane box laying around and threw him in there. So my wife told me why don't we just name him cane so I had to go with that
I usually name mine based on the way they act. My first ball python got named curly, then I had Reaper (ball python) thanks to her fast eating habits, then Mistress (ball python) because she was the biggest ball I had owned at the time. Now I have my Boa named Keira which means little dark one.

Not sure, I think its just a lack of interest. I actually tried it many years ago, but I quickly realized that I was so uninterested in any of the names that I constantly had to look them up, which kind of defeated the purpose. Interestingly enough, I find the naming process really fun with foster dogs, but not with reptiles. I suppose it has something to do with the dogs being family members, whereas there is no personal relationship with the reptiles.

All my spiders get both names and ID numbers, and I use a Google spreadsheet to track feedings, molts, etc. across multiple devices. I refer to them all by name, but the ID numbers are helpful for organizing my spreadsheet and to keep track of breeding(which I don't currently do but may pick up again in the future)
I would probably do the same for the snakes if I had a lot of them. For just 5 snakes, though, names are plenty.

The latest addition to the fold is an Apricot Pueblan x Nelson's intergrade milk snake and I decided to go with something geographically / culturally appropriate. Both subspecies hail from Mexico. The Aztec winged serpent god Quetzalcoatl was the first runner up but that name sure is a mouthful. We went with Cociyo, the Zapotec serpent god of lightning, clouds and rain who made the world and dances across the sky during thunderstorms (occasionally striking at the earth or an unfortunate human).

I've always been fond of naming things. Sometimes names just happen. I had a betta fish I named Kirei because I saw him on the shelf and immediately though "sou kirei" meaning 'so pretty' in Japanese. However, most of the time, it's well thought out and chosen from a few after I get to know them. The two cats I named are Cassia Synge [she earned her middle name after singing her whiskers] and Number Six [who was born 6th. Also references a song by a band I love, I wear a number 6 on my necklace for him]. My snakes took much more thought. My best friend actually named Eir. I wanted something god-related with vowels that was easy for my family to pronounce since they couldn't say my bettas' Japanese names. Eir is pretty easy. She's the goddess/valkyrie of healing in Norse mythology. Think of her as an ER doctor. I was preparing to have dental work down when I got Eir so it fit.
Xango was harder to find a name for and I started looking weeks before I had him. Xango is the Candomble [a religion in South America, especially Brazil] spelling of an African god of thunder, Shango. I loved it and it had a connection to Brazil which I was trying to do. He seems like a pretty fun god. He throws parties and plays drums which is what you hear when it thunders, according to legend. He also uses a double headed axe and Xango has a marking on the back of his head that reminds me of one. Only downside? My sister always thinks I'm saying Django wrong, like Django Reinhardt.
Ours are predominately named in themes, book series, tv shows, etc. Others just randomly came and fit, so stuck to them. Usually try to do pair names for the male/female pairs we get but that doesn't always happen.

I have four snakes, two of which have generic names.
Max is my Sinaloan Milk Snake, which was his name before I got him and it suited him so I kept it.
Bob is my littlest Rosy Boa (actually my boyfriends, but I care for him) he was named by my boyfriend who also isn't so good at naming things, lol!
My other two snakes are Rosy Boas: Pyro and Athena, Pyro is my first snake ever. I wanted his name to be cool and he had tints of red and orange so I named him after "fire", pyro is from Greek Origin, as is Athena who is the goddess of wisdom :)
