I've had Shredder for a little over 2 weeks now and he seems to be doing well. He's eaten every time, had a perfect shed, and has been great the few short times he's been handled. I was feeding him mice fuzzys but tonight I decided to try a small rat fuzzy to see if he'd take it and he didn't hesitate. I think we're going to get along just great. Here he is hanging out after his meal.

I know what you mean. I figured he'd be a little bitey, wondered about him taking his first few meals, and thought making the transition to rats might be difficult. I was happy to be wrong on all those accounts.
My dilemna is now that I've gotten him to take a rat I still have about 45 mice fuzzys to feed off. Most of the rat fuzzys are too big for him right now. I guess I'll keep feeding him the mice fuzzys, with an occasional rat, and once the mice are gone it'll be rats exclusively. My coastal will eat mice and rats, maybe the jungle will too.

My IJ takes both without hesitation. I plan to regularly rotate to prevent her from getting too picky lol

Pretty snake EL-Ziggy. You're starting to build a very nice diverse collection of beautiful and interesting snakes. Please keep us posted with photos as he grows.

I like that plan too Mink. I prefer to feed a diverse diet of rats, mice, and chicks. My kings don't like rats but will eat mice and chicks. My female bull eats anything, the male loves chicks, eats rats most of the time, but usually turns his nose up to mice. Let's see what the carpets prefer. How are you liking that IJ btw?

Thanks Jim. There are so many beautiful and amazing snakes. I know I can't have them all but I sure wish I could have a lot more. :D

Yup. I'll try quail chicks eventually and see if anyone takes those. As far as my IJ goes though, TOTAL love!!! She's calm, curious, doesn't mind being handled, can be handled for extended times (she just chilled inside my shir collar for over an hour while I watched a movie lol) and so far has a great, but polite appitite. She doesn't strike like my BPs or like Caly used to, but slowly takes it in an almost demure way. She makes me want another one already lol. If I should ever get another though, I'll save up for a nice caramel jag! ^_^
(My wish list is forever long.....I should invest in opening a reptile 'zoo' and charge an entry fee lol!)

I really doubt your other fuzzy rats are too big for him. I thought the same thing with my first baby carpet, but after seeing pictures of carpet pythons that had swallowed relatively mind-boggling big animals in the wild I realized the difference between them and other snakes like boas or clolubrids. I haven't offered the new one rats yet, she is too small for the fuzzy ones I have, but Bogey will take either quite happily.

I feel you TnB. I'm amazed at the prey size these guys can take down but I don't want to push it :). I know the 4-6g mouse fuzzys are a small meal for him and I could probably give him 2 of those for some feedings. The snake is 37g and the rat fuzzy I gave him was 8g which is really just a large rat pinky. It took him about 10 minutes to get past the head and shoulders but after that it was smooth sailing. I thought he'd give up and spit it out but he kept at it. Most of the other rat fuzzys are closer to 18g each with a few smaller ones like the one I gave him. I'm feeding the larger fuzzys to my 140g yearling coastal until he's ready for rat pups which won't be long. I think the fuzzys are a little small for the coastal too but I have quite a few of them to feed off. The breeder said try him with a jumbo mouse (35g) which I also thought would be too large but he smashed that with no problem.
Your lucky I cant get Max to take rat pinks or fuzzies.I didnt feed him for ten days and still wont touch a rat. I am going to wait 5 more days and see if he will take one. I tried scenting it with a mouse but he still wouldnt touch it.

You could try starting with rat-scented mice and then switch to mouse-scented rats. With my babies that are still too small to take rat pinks, I defrost their mice in the same bag as the rats that my other snakes eat so that when it comes time to switch them over they'll already be used to the smell of rat on their food.
Good idea prairiepanda, I usually defrost everything together in a bowl of water so they should be cross scented somewhat. I will try really rubbing the rat on the mice and see how that goes.
