Here are a few of mine. Just the basics. I have to meet DEC requirements, which are locked enclosures, labeled with warning signs, scientific and common names. I keep them on news paper because it makes me keep their enclosure cleaner and also makes me handle the snakes more often for enclosure maintenance. The enclosure also have to be in a escape proof room that is also locked. The room has a door that goes all the way to the floor and the heating duct has been sealed off. The room door also has a key lock.

This is my Arizona Black Rattlesnakes enclosure. Notice newspaper substrate, hides, water bowl and pad lock for safety.

Snakes were from a DEC confiscation, so I have no idea of age or location.

The critter tanks come with sliding screen lids that can be locked with a pad lock.

The plants are various succulents. You can usually find pretty good assortments in the indoor garden department at home improvement stores.

I like to use PM Herps (white PVC cages with drop down doors) for arboreals and smaller terrestrial snakes. For larger terrestrial hots, I love Vision cages for their sliding doors. You definitely want sliding doors for Gaboons, puffs and rattlers, as it makes feeding/watering a bit less risky to your fingers! ;)

Do any of you keep buzztails in glass tanks with screen lids? I've thought about but I just read something on the other venomous board about his striking the top of the cage and spray venom in his eyes! I've always liked glass cages as I feel I ahve more control and feel safer, with the plastic cages with sliding glass doors I almost feel more at risk because you have to get your face lower to see into the cage (depending on how deep they are).

I keep rattlers in glass tank with screen lids. If you are afraid of them striking the screen put a piece of cardboard over the screen to prevent it.

I don't keep any hots in tanks. I personally prefer front-opening cages. I've read in numerous scientific articles, as well as heard from several long-time keepers, that the snakes' natural predators would approach from above, so they are more defensive if you loom over them. This certainly seems to be the case, especially with my Gaboons. If I stand up near them, they start hissing loudly. Crouching, moving slowly and smoothly, and giving them time to notice and accept an approaching hook seem to help me keep my snakes relatively easy to work with and calm.

There's certainly nothing wrong with keeping them in tanks, as long as the cages are secure and the keeper can keep the humidity up. Jerry (SSnakess) seems to have a lot of success with his enclosures. Since I don't have to worry about meeting any specific requirements in PA, I try to make the enclosures more naturalistic, but do use locks on all of my cages, or at least shims to brace sliding doors.

I'm in NY and every states has different requirements. In NY, every enclosre has to be keyed locked and labeled with common and scientific name and warning of venomous reptiles inside. The room they are kept in has to be escaped proof, keyed locked and the door to the room has to be labeled warning of venomous reptiles. No one who does not have a venomous license or is listed on your license as handler can touch the venomous snakes.

Then there are regulations as to how you can transport the snakes.

Thanks Jerry, Ill have to research AZ State laws and see what is required. So far I have only found that you need a license but no housing requirements.

Sorry for the delayed response. Mostly CB. I live where most of these are found so I have seen them in situ but can get my hands on the CB animals.

Argh... I wish hots were legal here. Would love to at least work with them under a mentor to learn as much as I possibly can. There's no substitute for experience.
