Wanted to post a general update on the Jungle Carpet Python I got a couple of months ago.

- A few weeks ago I noticed that he wasn't utilizing his hides all that much and seemed to prefer climbing/perching instead. That, and he seemed to prefer being outside the enclosure with the room to cruise around. I began to feel that his little tub was too small for him and ended up buying a 16ish gallon tub and some new decoration.

The tub on the left was his old home (the 10 qt was recommended to me by several breeders, and I'm sure it would have worked fine, but I wanted the size upgrade)

- He also ate his first rat (pinky) a few weeks ago! But then the next week, he refused the meal (although he did show interest), and I also noticed that his color was looking duller. I was initially concerned but realized that he must have been getting ready to shed.

The "ugly" little guy. My hair is his favorite hang out place, and he'll wrap himself around my ponytail and sit there for hours if I let him. I walk around the house with him perched on my head (carrying a compact mirror in case I want to check on him).

- He DID take longer to go into blue than I expected, but the shed ended up being completely perfect and he looked fantastic.

He actually fell asleep like this, and stayed this way until my hand went numb and I had to move him

His yellow isn't this bright (yet), but the lighting sure brings it out

I'm really happy with how he's turning out, and he's very easy to handle too, once I scoop him out of his enclosure. He was feeling extra defensive when he was beginning to go into blue (and I hadn't realized that yet), but after he shed his behavior noticeably improved. Overall, I like his temperament, too and am enjoying this pet snake thing!

Could be that he is trying to escape the heat. The heat source seems to take most of the floor space.

Your Jungle has become very stunning from the last time. Which clutch did you say he was from?

Interesting thought! The thing is though, in his old enclosure it took up very little floor space, and here in the new one if he's not on his ladder or in the plastic tree branches, he's under the vines pressed right up to the floor. If he's ever on the floor, he will always choose the side with the heat. When he was getting ready to shed he spent every moment in one of his two hides over the heat I actually only increased the amount of space the heat tape took up because I noticed how much he preferred the heated surface.

The cruising around usually only happens after I had him out with me and then put him back inside the enclosure. At that point, he'll be moving around for a while (sometimes even hours), but he isn't that active at any other time. That's the reason why I assumed he just wanted to continue roaming, but I definitely could be wrong. Something I did notice though was that he doesn't use the plastic hides, but will crawl under water bowl occasionally (which alarmed me the first time because I thought he'd escaped). I think it's time to upgrade to a slightly larger hide with a smaller opening.

He's from the 2013 clutch that was a breeding between the 2008 CVR Leary female and her 2011 zebra son: http://i.imgur.com/XEBDeSW.png I'm surprised with the difference that one shed could make, but I'm certainly not complaining :D

i would put your heat mat/pad the other way round, and only cover a quarter to a third of the tub at most

in your first pic the mat runs length wise

i would have it running front to back,on the left or right side in that pic mate

you have one of the best looking hatchling Jungles ive seen in a while

Yeah he is looking really bright! One shed makes a huge difference. I just moved up my jcps enclosure from a 30qt tub to a 62qt iris tub yesterday and she seems quit happy to stretch out more. My coastal jag is still in his 30qt tho but he is still quit a bit smaller.

my JCP tub is the same size approx...28Lx12Hx18W...she she uses every inch of space...but we have it filled with hides, foliage, vines, etc...and heat only on 1/3 of one end of the tub...and she is about the same size...about 2ft long (just a guess from her stretching from one side of the tub to the other), weighed 74g when we got her...

Oh, interesting! I originally had it vertically but switched it to length-wise when someone told me that the snake should be able to stretch out across the heat. I guess it doesn't really matter because I've never seen him stretch out and settle down.

And I made sure to switch it to only cover 1/3 of the floor right after I responded to Mikoh's post. When I first got the heating mat and tub, it had been pretty cold with the temperature in the tub about mid-70s (around 23-24 C) so I wanted to make up for it. Thanks (and to Mikoh and everyone else, too) for correcting me, glad I have it right now :)

He really is turning out nice, I hadn't expected this much yellow in such a young/small JCP but I'm very pleasantly surprised.

I was really surprised! I thought at first it was just because how dull he was before when he was getting ready to shed, but then I compared to past pictures and it's quite a difference. And yeah, I'm glad that I ended up moving him into a larger tub! He utilizes everything (except for the hides, for the most part LOL) and it's nice for me to see him stretch out.

I'm steadily adding in more and more of the foliage/vines/leaves/little tree climbs. I didn't have much originally because the old tub was so small, but it's fun adding in new things because like your JCP, he also uses it all! He doesn't utilize his hides as often (except for when he was in blue) but I'll be buying some "real" hides from RBI soon and see if he likes those better. He's about the same size, a little over 2 feet when I tried to measure him, but I still haven't gotten around to weighing him yet. Thanks for the reminder!

Hi! Thanks so much, and you know I definitely intend to. Been a stressful last few weeks but I'll be getting out the real camera next week for some better pictures.

Great looking JCP!

Thanks! Really owe the breeder for this one, he did a great job :)

Ours rarely uses hides...always on her vines or curled up under a bush...uses the hides only after eating...and then she is still back on her vines within a few hours...she is quite the interesting animal...yours is gorgeous, btw!

as long as a carpet python hatchling is NOT a nervous feeder, then i put them straight into a 4x2x2ft vivarium

just make sure there's plenty, hides, branches, fake plants, etc, to make sure there's plenty of cover for them to hide and feel secure

i love how clean, bright and deep his yellow is already,if he keeps going the way he is.....

he will make a great looking adult
