View Full Version : Inland Carpet (Murray Darling) or Bredli?

Thanks to Mikoh4792 I learned about Inland Carpets (also called Murray Darling) and Bredli carpets. I contacted Justin Julander at Australian Addiction Reptiles and Nick Mutton at Inland Reptiles. Both are SUCH GREAT GUYS and I can't thank them enough for their advice....especially Justin. I have tentatively agreed to buy a male yearling Inland Carpet from Justin and intend to send him a check tomorrow. BUT I keep thinking about the beautiful female Bredli he also has for sale. Justin (very patient man) has answered my many questions and basically says both Inlands and Bredli are extremely docile snakes when adult but Bredli are a little "feisty" and "snappy" when they are younger unlike inlands which are generally always calm and docile. Bredli are also bigger when adult (8 feet vs 5-6 feet for adult inland carpets.) My gut tells me the Inland is the best choice, but the Bredli is so beautiful! The size wouldn't bother me either. Anyone out there with Bredli and/or Inland experience that would care to contribute their proverbial two cents? I am definitely getting either the inland OR the Bredli, but I don't have room for both.

No one can make the choice for you. What do you like? Do you like a grey/red/brown snake with a blueish tint, or a rusty red snake with whitish bands?
In the end even with their differences in size, color...etc they are both morelia so it will come down to what you prefer.
If I were to choose between one to add to my collection, I'd probably get an inland. I was actually thinking of getting one in the future.

Of course you are right that the decision is mine. The Bredli that is available is a female hatched in July, 2012. The Inlands (male) are a year younger. The age difference and larger size of the Bredli appeals to me as I was hoping to find an adult when I first started looking. In any case, they grow soon enough and inlands certainly do sound like amazing snakes. Especially their temperament.

After weighing the pros and cons, and all things being equal between the two, I say go with your gut or flip a coin :). I'm sure you'll make the best choice for you. Best wishes.
You know that no matter what you decide, you'll end up with the other one soon enough. You can't have just one Morelia. :)

They are so similar in the long run that it comes down to which you like the looks of best. I can say that my bredli never had the nippy problem that people talk about.

pdomensis, could you please tell me the gender, age and size of your Bredli? If I don't get one now (I might buy both the Inland and the Brendli I've been looking at) I will almost certainly get one in the future. What size enclosure do you keep yours in? The one that is available now is a female about 18 mos old. and I am getting conflicting opinions about the correct cage size for an adult. Some say a T10 (48x24x15) is fine while others have said an adult Bredli would need a 72x24x24 cage. I have room for a 60x24x18 cage and was considering one of those for a Bredli. What do you think? Would that be big enough for a full grown adult female Bredli?

Mine is a 2012 male, so just about 18 months old now, and just hit 48 inches. I would definitely lean toward the larger sizes of the enclosures you mentioned, but even the smaller one has been used by many people. You'll find that smaller size popular with breeders with lots of animals trying to conserve space, but for a good looking enclosure with room to move around the 60x24 would be fine. I am building a 48x24x36 for mine.
There are several people here with adult carpets to get info from, and Nick and Justin are always great.
One word of advice, when I got my carpet it was only a few months old, 22 inches and about as thick as my little finger. I spent the next year ALMOST buying another snake because I wanted something with some size to it. I finally feel like I have a good sized snake and have stopped scanning the classifieds every day. My point is, I would get the bigger snake now, or you'll be buying it anyway in a month or two.

Well, I couldn't decide whether to buy the Inland Carpet or the Bredli Carpet.....so I bought both from Justin Julander at Australian Addiction. Due to cold weather conditions I wont have either for at least a few weeks, and I am very excited to get them. These will be my first carpets and I'm looking forward to learning more about them as they grow up. Thanks again to all of you who suggested I look at Centralian Carpets. Their docile temperaments and good looks are exactly what I was looking for.

Ask him for a copy of "The Complete Carpet Python". Probably one of the best things I bought when I really got into carpets.
Welcome to the addiction. Morelia are the best.

I need some advice about the cages for the Bredli and Inland I just bought. Earlier today I ordered one T10 (48x24x15) for the Inland and one 60x24x18 for the Bredli. Both from Animal Plastics. Later in the day I got an email from Justin saying I could keep both snakes in enclosures as small as a 10 gal set up for a year or more. I had intended to temporarily house them in something small until the large AP cages arrived (at least 8 weeks) and then put them in there. That is actually what I would prefer to do. My assumption was that it was OK to put the young snakes in the large enclosures and as long as they had hides to feel "safe" they would be fine and just grow into the space. That's what I did with my Dumerils boa. He was little when I got him but I put him in a T10 with a couple of hides and he did great. Never a problem whatsoever and he's grown happily in the large cage. Please advise what I should do. No sense getting the AP cages now if I'm not going to be able to use them for a year or more.

Like I always say....nature is rumored to be massive ;)
Yes. Provide lots and lots of cover, plants and stuff to climb and it really doesn't matter if it's big or not.

+1. You can put a baby in a city sized enclosure and it will be fine as long as there is food, water, and shelter.

I would go with the advice of a guy who co-authored a book on carpet pythons.

I did ask Justin for a copy of THE COMPLETE CARPET PYTHON and he is going to send it to me next week. I should have plenty of time to read it before I receive my Inland and Bredli.

Cool. I asked my local library if they could get a copy of the complete carpet via interlibrary loan and they said it wasn't available, so they bought a copy instead! Can't wait to check it out.
Get both.....win win :freakedout:

I just received my male Inland (hatch date June, 2013) and female Bredl (hatch date May, 2012) from Justin Julander of Australian Addiction. Both snakes are BEAUTIFUL and arrived today in perfect, healthy condition. I can't thank Justin enough for all his help and advice. These are gorgeous animals and I look forward to watching them grow to maturity.
