Finally getting the hang of macro shots. A steady arm and good lighting is what I needed.

only thing lacking is light - get yourself a flash ring, you'll really bring out the color contrast and depth/textures, you can get LED flash rings fairly cheap, just for a light boost, or you can get a proper flash ring which allow really tight shutter speeds, but they are very pricey, and not really necessary for snakes, which dont tend to zoom about their enclosures lol

have you got a reversing ring for your lens? thats how I started out doing extreme macros, getting an Ants head to fill the picture, with just a 50mm lens, is awsome :D couple of quid on ebay, check your lens aperture control tho, you may need to manually hold the aperture open to take a pic

I don't remember what camera you have or do I know whats in your price range but I picked up a used macro sigma lens for about 300 that takes some seriously awesome macro shots if that is what you like. I don't have any fancy lighting, just some desk lamps and the on flash camera but the lens still works fantastic!

d5200 from nikon.

awesome i really like sigma for their cheaper yet good quality glass. I actually just ordered a 70-300mm from sigma that was only $156. Which one are you talking about?

I picked up a sigma 105, took this with my old D90 (haven't done much with my D7000 yet since my setup I had is to small for all my citters.

And like I said thats without any special lighting.

Your going to have fun with that 70-300mm I have a 55-300mm (mine isn't sigma is the only thing) and its taken some really awesome shots at full zoom.

Wow the image quality on that lens is really nice.

I used Nikon's 105mm micro for the pics above, and even though I was using sub-par lighting the sigma seems to be doing a better job on clarity.
