im looking to finally get a setup done for a corn snake and I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a good thermometer and humidity meter combo. the tank will either be 40 or 55 gallons and the heat pad will be hooked up to a hydrofarm thermostat.
if i have a humid hide what should the tank humidity be?

Get zilla or zoo med digital thermometers with a probe. They are like $5 each. And every hygrometer is different, the best way is to put the hygrometer meter in a bag of salt, once it stabilizes you can see how far off it is. A bag of salt should be about 75% humidity.

dont worry about humidity for a corn, just get the temps right and they will do fine with just a humid hide when they are in shed :)
If you get the whole enclosure right rather than just the temps then you won't need a humid hide when they go into shed.

Agreeing with Donnie here. Even for animals that don't require a lot of humidity having an enclosure that retains heat AND humidity well is best. Humidity isn't only good for shedding, it's good for hydration.

The salt needs to be wet.

having had one corn get 2 RI's in 3 months, @ just 45-50% humidity, early on in my snake keeping life, i've since always opted for well ventilated dry setups for them, a bowl of water is generally enough to keep the humidity around 25%, and a humid hide is a safety net they can choose to use, if they need.
I know corns can do well at a wide range of humidity, but thats my experience with them.

Damn 2 in 3 months is pretty bad. Do you think the 45-50 percent humidity a lone was the cause? Because that's usually the humidity I give to snakes like corns and rats.

hard to say, my Vet was very concerned and made the recommendation of keeping him dry, its not something I've had to deal with since, I switched him to a wooden viv with lots of ventilation and no spraying, and it never occurred again
could have been genetically predisposed to it, there is an element of that in every living thing, each snake is diffrent, just like humans...some love it @40C, some of us start to cook at 25C
