Here's another question...how do you maintain the temperatures for your snake:confused: if the power goes out? It's blowing like crazy, and it's a question I hadn't thought of until tonight! I sure hope the power doesn't go out before I have a solution!

We have a generator that keeps things going. I wired a second 'main breaker' on the house panel so I hard wire the genny to the panel, flip the city main off while the genny is in use, good to go! We had a 45hr black out just before Christmas (ice storm). NP!

Many use a UPS. Good for one or two enclosures for a short period. It should be noted these are not to be used with proportional thermostats. (Per Spyder Robotics)

This was posted a couple of days ago..

Here was my response

Three methods that I would use if it were to happen:

1) 72 hour hot packs used for shipping. Simple way to provide heat, wrap these in a small blanket and put them in a smaller temporary container with your cold blooded animal.

2)Heat up water if you can have a fire, or adequate heat source to do so. Put the water in a gallon jug and inside the enclosure to provide a heat source for the animal. The water in this method will need to be montinored closely to ensure that the water is changed with newer hot water before too low of temps occur. (obviously make sure the water isn't TOO hot when putting it in the container - *use a thermometer*)

3) Buy a generator

Small generators, UPSs, and heat packs are all excellent recommendations. I stock all three, as I live in an earthquake state. Water would work in a pinch as well, but as noted above, be very careful. They are also coming out with new battery technologies all the stime, such as the ones used with solar panel arrays. Good luck!

What to do when the lights go out?

Well i light some candles then turn on the old battier operated radio. I put it on something slow then take my wife in my arms and slow dance. Then we sit on the couch snuggled up and talk for hours like we use to or until we fall asleep.;)

I had this happen to me in late December with a big ice storm. What I did was I transfered my Hog into a rubber maid big enough for her to be semi comfortable. I lined the bottom with news paper and then put some aspen on top of that so she could burrow just a bit. Inside i placed 2 smaller tuberware containers full of hot water (which i heated over candles, took about 45 mins) and wrapped the rubermaid in a blanket. I changed the water every 3 hours. Should work for a short term solution if a generator isnt handy.

Kerosene heater that doesn't emit carbon monoxide. It helps to have a gas fireplace.

We had this happen a month ago, because at this moment i only own 1 animal. Fired up the wood-burning stove, and placed her in the living room until the power was back on (in a large plastic container) When i had a lot of animals i used a generator, which i still own but its a bit much to turn on for 1 snake (makes noise) but it will come in handy when i get bigger/more snakes.

Thanks for all the responses to this question, it looks like I wasn't the only one who was wondering! We do have a wood burning stove, so with that and heating water I'm confident now that I can keep her warm if it comes to a power outage.
