So much for calmly chilling in my had, as per previous photos. Post shed and feed he was all over the place. It was hilarious, even if it made for difficult photography! Fourth time handling, no musk, no strikes, just VERY active.

I'm glad I let the MBK fanclub sway me. He's really spoiling me though, not living up to the bitey reputation of baby kings at all.

You should have seen me try to hold him in one hand and do ANYTHING with the other though--I kept having to tilt my hand/arm this way and that to keep him from going off to...I don't even know. It was funny except when I was trying to spot clean, haha.

I do have a small container for full cleanings, etc, I just didn't want to put him down. :D

Thanks, E-Z. Yeah, it was packed wall to wall with vendors and people. I always get there early, because it's packed by 11:00. About 70% of the breeders are BPs but I always look for that different pattern look. Been looking for Thayeri and had my eye on some of the Albino Columbian Boas too.

Im actuallly moving this weekend, everything is packed and ready to go except my lil guys. Hopefully they dont freak out at the new place. Thanks all. Most of the hypos I've seen just had the dark orange with grey/black stripes. This is the only one I've seen with that much contrast and the different stripe pattern. It's my first snake since I was a kid so I'm pretty excited about it.

Very pretty little snake. I also have a Hypo Tangerine Male that I got from Doug Mong and they are indeed beautiful snakes. The one difference is that yours has more orange coloration than mine .

Beautiful snake Sharthun! I love the intense black. I'm not very good at photography, but I snapped this shot of Spirit, one of my Ghost Honduran Milk Snakes. She's about 2 years old and almost 4 feet long and weighs about 600 grams. My other Hondurans are younger/smaller but I'll try to post some photos of them later this week once they get their food digested a bit more.

Thanks El-Ziggy, She almost got out again today:( It was her feeding day today and I feed her in a separate tub that has handles that clamp up to lock the top in place. I usually just place the lid on top of the tub without bothering to lock it down since I sometimes feed more than one food item. I dropped in the first mouse which she grabbed right away and then I turned to do some work on my computer. I got engrossed in my computer work for about 5 minutes and thought, "Oh yea, I've got to feed her that second mouse." When I turned back around, I found that she had finished the first mouse, then crawled to the top rim of the feeding tub and pushed up the top of the tub and had about 1 foot of her body arched out as she was making her escape. Needless to say, from now on, I will always lock down the tops whenever I feed in a separate tub. This is the snake that escaped about 8 months ago and she is very good at hiding. I don't want to go through that again. I'll try to post some photos of my other Hondurans later this week.

Beautiful snake! I have another Honduran headed my way to round out my collection. She's an adult Albino Tangerine with the brightest yellow I've ever seen on a Honduran. She's coming from the collection of Tom Booton and will be shipped in a week or so. I've asked Tom to hold off shipping to accommodate a business trip I'll be on since I want to be there when she arrives. This is actually Tom's picture of her.

After being set straight by a good friend, I delved into research and finally ended up bringing her home.

This is my little aberrant California Kingsnake female, Eir. I was told she was 1-2 months but considering that they only fed them once a week and she's 16" already, I'm saying 2 months is more likely which makes her close to 3 now! I'm expecting her to go into blue in the next few days, I was told she shed a week before I got her.

He won't hold still for very long. Always has to be cruising. He shed about three days ago for the second time since I've had him in the above two.

This last one is from a few weeks ago, one of the few times I got him to hold still. Right now he's eating two hoppers every 7-9 days, but I think he's slowing down with the change in the seasons. I am not confident yet that he can take a small mouse though, but I plan to order one or two from the feeder breeder next month just to see what happens.

Is this the King Snake thread? :) Thought I'd pop in and say hello. I got my King Snake on 9/30, so I've had him about a week and a half. I named him King Tucker and I just love him! He went on a hunger strike, though. I tried feeding him three times...first time was on the day he got here, since some people said they have success feeding Kings on their first day. I tried and he wouldn't take it. Tried feeding him again that weekend, and he refused. Tried feeding him AGAIN today, and he finally took his first pinky mouse!!
I have read people feed their snakes 10-15% of their body weight. I weighed him after his feeding and he was at 14 grams, so he's probably about 11.5-12 grams before feeding since I weighed four pinky mice in their plastic bags and they were at 2.5 grams each. Is he getting too much food? Not enough? That's my biggest concern right now!! Ahhh I worry so much.

I just don't want to over-reach myself. Both of mine are still babies; I can wait until they grow up a little bit. I also need to think about space--my current enclosures are just modified aquariums, and well, they take up space.

I'm currently setting aside money to buy some nice enclosures that would not only give my two plenty of room as adults, but also might stack nicely. Now THOSE are expensive, and will be my limiting factor, haha.

Have you thought about/looked into building your own custom enclosure? I'm thinking you can likely get more space for less $ that way, and it can be built to fit wherever you want it.

I finally got a non-blurry picture while holding Eir! I'm feeding her 2 pinkies at a time, every week which I've recently decided to move up to every 5 days. Seven days just seems too long for her, doesn't feel right. I don't think she's up to fuzzies yet either, those pinkies look mighty big in her stretchy mouth.

When feeding her earlier today, she was very clumsy with the second pinkie and missed so many times.. then knocked it into her water dish once and into the wall a second time. I laid it down for her instead of holding it with the tongs and she took it by the middle and had to work her way to an end to eat it. Silly, silly girl. Made me laugh though.

My silly girl. I had to coax her out of the humid hide to get her to eat tonight. First one went down no problem. She had no problems striking it mid-air. The second? Totally different story. She doesn't seem to like when the pinky just lays there and decided to go for the tongs instead and nearly struck herself a moment later. I only had near-fuzzy sized pinkies or teeny tiny pinkies left for her tonight. I can't see one of those near-fuzzy sized pinkies fitting past her jaws yet, they look at least 2x the width of her.

Crappy pictures, it's late and she doesn't like my phone much. Wow, I've officially had her for 2 months now. She was 1-2 months when I got her. I'm expecting her second shed with me any day now. She ate the first pinky while still half inside her hide.

My LPS has one, I didn't notice until they weighed a beardie that came in, but that's a long time to handle her and I don't have anything to transport in so it doesn't seem worth stressing her out. Noodle does an amazing amount of sitting still for a colubrid. Makes it easy to take photos, albeit harder to take interesting ones. ;)

You're lucky. About the only time mine will set still is when they in their hides or under the bedding materials. That coupled with the fact that I am "photographically challenged" on both sides of the lens makes it tough for me to get any good photos.

Finally got my scale in! Looks like she's 18g! I don't know how much she weighed when I got her and it's been two days since her last feed. She's 4 1/2-5 months now. Pretty small for her age? I've decided she's afraid of fuzzies and there's nothing I can do about it until she's bigger.

Lefitte- Your Aberrant Cal King is beautiful. I do think she's a little small for 5 months. How much and how often do you feed her? Her enclosure looks really nice too. I'm not a big fan of newspaper bedding for kings though :).

Thank you! I've been having a little bit of trouble with feeding her since I was trying to feed her fuzzies. She took one, which gave me hope. Also my LPS is in the process of moving so I'm getting all my mice from Petsmart and can't select sizes at all so for the past month her feeding has been messed up. Before then I was feeding 2-3 pinkies every 5-7 days. I've decided to bump up the feedings though so I'm thinking 3-4 pinkies every 5-6 days. These pinkies are super small. Now that I have a scale, I can keep better track of things. I'm also using this site online to keep track of her care better.

The newspaper is working pretty well for me but I plan to move to sanichips or aspen later. I have multiple layers of large ripped up pieces and some shredded pieces so that she can still burrow if she wants to and none of the decor holds the paper down too much. She spends a bit of time between the layers of newspaper and between each of her hides.

3-4 pinks every 5-6 days sounds good Lefitte. Hopefully she'll take fuzzys for you again soon. Have you considered rat pinks? They're a little smaller than mice fuzzys but about the same weight or heavier. She'll bulk up quickly on rats. Just a thought.

I thought rat pinkies were the same size as mouse fuzzies so I haven't tried it. I don't think Petsmart sells them frozen though so it'll have to wait for my LPS to open back up in January. I was actually talking to a friend about those and would like to move her on to those if I can since I've heard they plump them up well. If I can find rat pups, I'll try them! She really liked the large pinkies I gave her a couple times.

Haha your baby looks a bit smaller than mine is. (Congrats by the way!) Eir should be on fuzzies but is scared of them so I'm having to feed her more pinkies. I'm feeding the Arctic Mice brand right now whose pinkies tend to be really small. I'm sure you're fine for now. The pictures of her feeding made those pinkies look pretty big. Eir practically inhales them.

I usually feed my snakes 10-15% of their body weight per feeding. Younger ones get up to 20% of their body weight. I don't normally like to feed more than 2 or 3 items per feeding but since your king won't take larger prey you may have to bump it up a bit. For a while my Cal King wouldn't eat anything larger than a mouse hopper, even though he could handle large or jumbo mice, so I'd feed him as many as 4 hoppers. The total weight of food was always in the same parameters. I'd much rather feed one (50g) jumbo mouse at .80 cents than four (12g) hoppers at .50 cents each. It's much more cost, energy and time efficient.
