so..after work today, the hubby and I decided to run to petco and see if the anery corn I wanted was still there..figured 50% off I would pick it up along with a 10 gallon starter kit and not spend more than $60 total...WELLLLLL...the girls happened to have a few of the snakes out handling them for some customers and I got a chance to actually handle the pastel ball I had been admiring (not a ball python fan, but something in her eyes always drew me to her)...she had a terrible shed going on and it was stuck to her neck pretty bad...they let me hold her for almost an hour while they were busy showing other people other critters (i know the staff) and after a while the hubby decided to let me have her...$75 for the snake and $100 for the 20 gal kit, I now have "Persephone"!! gave her a bath in Shed-Ease and she is all cleaned up!!

ok? there were 3 other balls there, all muddy colors, almost black eyes...this one was advertized as a pastel...from what i read, pastels have bright yellow to gold colors, less brown, and greenish to yellowish eyes...there was also a breeder there who sexed her for me on the spot and he also assured me she was pastel...

Gratz on the new snake. Looks pastel-ish to me in the last one, but Im not real familiar with balls other than mine.

pastels can vary in their shades...it is the eyes that give it away, from what the breeder and all the websites tell me...I was so excited, and now everyone is bringing me down :(

I think it is a pastel but (and don't take this the wrong way) a low quality pastel. That only matters if your breeding. Otherwise any snake can be a great "pet" . Shed ease is useless product. Water works best to rid of oldshed and proper husbandry is best for all shedding. Shed ease is a gimmick product.

It is a pastel just a very low quality which as stated doesn't matter if your not breeding.

I have never been a BP fan (even though my daughter loves them) and to be honest, yes, i was attracted to her yellow colors...but it was her personality as i was holding her that i fell in love with...to me she is gorgeous, and i am super excited to have her!
As far as the shed-ease, I only used it because I had a partial bottle that was included in a package deal I got on a used tank I bought a year ago and I never used it...so I tried it out...so I didn't waste money on it :)

Yeah, looks pastel to me, too. I'd not worry about it though, as long as you and the snake are healthy and satisfied then you have nothing to worry about.

thank you. I do admit she isn't "high quality"..she does have some brown in her along the spine, but she is WAY lighter than all the normals I have seen...plus the eyes kinda give it away...she seems healthy, very active, and eats well...we are happy to have her :)

That's all that matters. Don't let others be dream stealers. You are happy and love her. That is way more important than how close to a pastel she is. Congrats. They are wonderful lil critters.

its just so odd..never thought i would want a BP...hubby initially said no...now once we have her home, he adores her...I may have him talked into going to the MD expo in the summer...he may end up with his carpet python ;)

Aaahaha! (Nice dude)

Yeah, that's a pastel. Prob just the camera. One of my super pastels glows like it has batteries but in pics it just looks like a nice pastel.

Either way, at 75bucks you should be happy!

OH...as it's your first ball...start building racks now! :)

Congrats.

thanks :) and hubby and I were already talking about how to expand the "living space" in the snake room...I'm not one for rack systems...I like nice looking vivs...I do know he wants a carpet at some point, but other than that, we are just waiting for something to "strike" us as something we "have" to have... :D

I was just going to say, that is definitely a pastel, hands down. She may not be the most vibrant but it's very common for pastels to 'brown out'. However I'm sure it doesn't really matter since she's such a sweet heart!

Welcome to the pythons...it has only just begun ;)

Much better pics. All pastels brown out to a certain degree as they age. Your husband is smart. I always tell people to just get 1 or 2 snakes then stop. Wait a year and then consider more. You should post a description and better shots of your enclosure. Most on this site are not a fan of balls being kept in aquariums and with good reasons. If you can accept some critisism it will be worth it for the health of your snake. Humidity can/will be an issue using an aquarium. Please describe and let us help you out :)

Edit. I am sorry. I confused this thread with another and thought you were a new keeper. I didn't mean any offence ;)

Sharlynn93

;) no harm, no foul...she is in an aquarium, but she has her UTH (which is actually too small for the aquarium so it doesnt put off enough heat, hence the black light) and has a daytime bulb which I only turn on for extra heat when the temp drops in the room (which has only been once since I got her), damp towel and spraying down the cage regularly until we can get the new hinged lid I ordered and cut the plexiglass to fit the 2 halves...after christmas I will get an appropriate size UTH and thermostat for her but for now the digital thermometer i have on that side in the substrate varies between 82 and 88 depending on ambient temps in the room...right now she is on a mix of reptibark and aspen, but considering putting a layer of eco earth underneath that to hold more moisture...(keeping aspen on top due to the fact the eco earth is so messy and gets everywhere)...
